New IM Worm On The Loose

    By TechWeb News
    [IMG]
A new worm that spreads via Microsoft's instant messaging client began badgering users Monday, several security firms said.

Dubbed Funner, the worm propagates by sending itself to all the contacts listed in the user's copy of MSN Messenger, Microsoft's IM client.

According to Symantec's alert, Funner may also try to contact a domain -- www.78p.com -- to download additional components.

Other than reproducing, Funner's main purpose seems to be to modify Windows' Hosts file on the compromised machine so that attempts to contact any of some 937 sites -- many of them Asian porn sites -- will be redirected to the IP address that matches 78p.com. That Web site, however, was offline as of mid-morning Monday. Both Symantec and rival McAfee have labeled Funner as a low-level threat for the moment.

Some advice I was given by someone in the know ;)

    More reasons to avoid MSN.

    Here is my advice:

    Solution 1

    a) ditch your hotmail account. open a yahoo or gmail one.

    b) Stop using IE, use Mozilla (www.mozilla.org)

    c) Never sign into Microsoft Passport .net ever again

    d) stop using any flavour of Outlook, use Mozilla Mail instead

    e) Install a personal firewall: use ZoneAlarm from www.zonelabs.com. It's
    free.

    f) get a virus tool and a subscription if you haven't already got one

    Solution 2

Get a Linux CD ( Mandrake 10, RedHat 9) and install a secure, reliable
operating system with secure applications. It's FREE.

I think I'm going to use yahoo messenger from now on...:)

Yahoo is far better than msn it's got loads of funky extra's you can use.

I think Msn is monitered by the FBI anyway:p Have I said that enough yet?

    Don't be suprised.
As long as there will be computer systems, there will be viruses. They are here to stay... that is untill someone comes along and makes an infallible operating system.

Ummmm..... but it still requires you to be stupid enough to run an executable to install it, so it hardly constitutes a vulnerability in MSN, Windows, or anything else....

That's funny. Mozilla mail is shite. Outlook's a fucking excellent program. It may be plagued by typical Msoft vulnerabilities, but that's not really a problem is a bit of basic common sense is exercised. Y'know.... don't open executable attachments, run office/windows update regularly, make sure you're running up-to-date AV software. I've been using the internet for longer than I care to think about, and I've never had so much as a sniff of a virus.

...... and sit staring blankly at your computer wondering what the point of it is if you can't install any useful software on it :p

Arghhh!!! There's nothing wrong with MSN! This is paranoid bullshit! This worm can't affect you unless you bloody install it!!!!
