Yesterday on Oprah there was a family on the show who are addicted to Heroin. Actually they weren't even on the show they were being telecasted because they knew they couldn't be away from the heroin that long. The mother, father, and 2 teenage sons. Then there was another segment where a girl who is pregnant was also addicted and she had to shoot up every 4 hours.

I watched this thinking of a few people I know including myself (opiate addictions in general) and it was very disturbing to watch. These people lost everything they ever had and there were babies, children, innocent lives being torment by this drug disease.

I don't know what to think. I guess those "parents" must have been very young when they had their sons and probably weren't able to get rid of their addiction so the boys have grown up in such world and now they're all in.

It makes me sad... I know that isn't a good way of describing it. But it is just simply sad.

I sort of cringe and then hope there is no reincarnation when I hear things like that

My mom cried when she caught me smoking pot once, so I definitely cannot relate

It is their choice and their life, so who are we really to judge?

The addiction started with the husband having some accident and he was prescribed Percocets and Oxycotin. Then that escalated to heroin 4 years ago.

I couldn't imagine watching my sons do that to themselves. The sons stole to get their dope. They risked their lives every day stealing and then dying a slow death.

For those people who have done heroin or have had a severe opiate addiction how did they get past the sickness and get well? Did they replace the heroin with subs or methodone? I hear that is just as addicting. Can a person be set completely free from it?

    Thanks for your responses. :)

I don't have an addictive personality... I can't imagine being dependent on something. I can't imagine John and I doing heroin together and eventually with our baby...

I am not judging just am shocked.

What about the children/babies who don't have a chance because of their parents addiction? We are not to judge or to say that's just wrong?

Is there such a thing as constructive judging? No one wants to see someone throw their life away or harm someone else's.

I think it's awesome that you had that drive to want to save your life. I honestly look up to you for doing that.

I see your point there, but is it right to have your babies live a boring, middleclass life?
Is it right to give them an education and to train them to be robots so they too can become slaves of society?

I don't think education makes you a slave of society. I think education makes a person have some thought process as to what is right and wrong or what will hurt them or others. Maybe give a person a conscience?

I think the opposite happens, but that makes for a completely different discussion and it would take this thread very off-topic.

their life, their problem. I hate to be an asshole but that's how I see life.

I'll admit it's unfair that those addicts decided to bring new life into the world, but in all honesty, it happens everyday. all we can hope is that people who don't care about themselves or their lives, and don't have their shit together, stop reproducing.

I don't see it happening though.
