Gorbachev said "Communism was shit , but Marx was right" ( sort of).
Basically Marx said Communism would take 200 years to "re-educate people".

I've met some really rich businessmen who are totally unmaterialist(Marxist) and see Capitalism as the Devil Incarnate.
But , people are conditioned from birth the importance (?!) of what car they have , what brand of clothes etc , instead of solving disease/poverty etc.

    Under Marxism , I'd love to be a scientist.But here , I'm better in business- I *think*

Since when is Marxism "unmaterialism"? It is dialectical materialism.

Please tell me what economic system has done more to end poverty and disease on a global scale than capitalism. If you think capitalism does not bring people out of poverty and disease i have about 1 billion indians and another 1 billion chinese who would like to say hello....

Capitalism feeds clothes and cures the hungry naked and dying

I'm guessing you're American?Where Socialism and Communism were portrayed by an imperial power. ( the American RIght) portrayed them as "pure evil"

China actualy stopped the food shortages and dire poverty by traditional Communism. And the vast majority of the place is very poor - dont let the skyscrapers and Louis Vuitton shops fool you!

The Soviet Union was utterly decimated by WW2- but it rose incredibly in a short space of time - to give the average person a *very good* standard of living( I am half E European btw)

Capitalism *really* means control by those with Capital.Tho some willl have you believe it means government by issues of capital.
Theres nothing wrong with sensible allocation of resources - but both Capitalism and Socialism can claim to do that.

The problem comes when there is a system of huge waste ,a form of slavery , and flashy over-consumption by a few becomes the God of it all.

Capitalism has caused mass poverty- just take Africa.
Technology and government with purpose solve things.

Capitalism all too often blames "the Market" , like a kid would blame "the fairies".
    I'm a businessman - trade and investment.
The problem is that people have had the Devil put in them. They're motivated by stupid things. And we have these bizarre forces that governments grovel to , and don't understand.
We're told "the Market" will replace government .That is nonsense.

Our greatest minds are obsessed with yachts , and places on "Rich Lists".Yet they could be actually creating rather than transferring.

    Pressed Rat
I mean materialism - motivation by excessive acquisition of unnecessary objects/ consumption.

Anyway , bedtime for me- its v late.Interesting debate tho.

Marx had some interesting things to say. Ultimately I agree with his entire class struggle argument.

I don't feel that the entire means of production should be in the hands of the state. It's inefficient, cumbersome, and discourages innovation. I think Marx is much more valuable as political philosophy than any sort of blueprint on how society should be governed.

For the record, this bailout that's going on now, is exactly the kind of model Marx warned about. Capitalism doesn't exist when bad business models aren't free to fail.

We're going to be buying out Detroit soon I feel. GM and Ford.

Detroit is already being bought out. Famous MoTown artists are buying houses in their old neighbourhoods for $1. I'm not even fuckin' joking. There are homes in Detroit going for $1, because that's what they're worth.

I'd buy one of those.... seriously.

even though it's just worth that, and I'd never expect the value to go up, having someplace to crash in that part of the world seems like it could be nice.

Ugh, have you been to East Side of Detroit? I mean, that's normally where I go when I'm there over to Nemo's bar where the old white folk hangs out around the Irish Pubs. But dude, Detroit has turned into a hellhole.

Which is a crying shame. The old Train Station there is magnificent to behold if you can overlook the broken glass and graffiti. Terrible shame. It had so much potential.

Don't get me started abou the mayor of Detroit.

    In a crackhouse in Detroit?

You'd want to escape that if you saw it.

I remember going on family vacations in and around the Detroit area, and as a child my siblings and I would count crackhouses as a game. "Look! I found 5 crackhouses in a row together! Neener! I beat Jeff's record!"

It's a scary-ass place. You ever get your oil change in Detroit? They change your oil over a sewer grate. You'd get raped and robbed if you spent a week living in a house you bought for $1 in Detroit East End. You don't want to see the ghetto.
