(from Solid Foundation - An Oral History of Reggae; David Katz) Whilst Augustus Pablo's early melodica efforts breathed new life into the reggae instrumental, in 1972 engineers such as King Tubby and Errol Thompson took things one step further. Dub version B-sides, and the odd instrumental A-side, began to elevate drum and bass to the fore, with heavily mudulated rhythms transformed through the application of effects such as reverb and echo, applied either to instruments or to snatches of vocals that drifted in and out of the mix. there we go
