Hi. I first want to congratulate the creators of this site. (excuse my English) I don't know anything about dreadlocks, but that I badly want them. I am writing this thread cause I haven't found my questions answered here. I found a lady who can dread my hair. She has beautiful dreads, and I stop her on the street because of that to ask her where she got them from. She said she used to dread tourist in her native country ( Jamaica) But she has told me many thing that no agree with the things I have read here and in others sites. 1. She said I can't wash them almost during a year at the begining until they lock well. Also told me that I can't wash my hair as I usually do. I can wash them twice a year. 2. Second she'll use natural hair to wind my hair. , so I thought It was reasonable cause my hair it is so fine and straight...Now I'm not sure of this cause the pics I have found don't look like that. 3. I would like to know if there are different kind of dreads. i have seen many looks in this style that i don't know what's the differences. What to have. Is there babylocks? 4. I read not to use wax and all those chemicals..I'm wondering what is that natural process of locking? Could any of you guys can give me a link that explain step by step the entire process of making dreadlock without these chemicals? Excuse my long thead but I think this is the only place I can make all my questions. Thanks a lot for your time, and again thanks for this space! ENIGMAH
Oh man....I'm just gonna wait for someone like soaringeagle to have a hay day with this one. (There's others who are much more knowledgeable than myself) I'll just say one thing. Typically you wanna wash em with a none residue soap of some kind to "speed up" the dreading process. So, what she told you about not washing for a year, although hair would still naturally dread, probably won't be the "route" you decide to take.
She probably means no shampoo/ conditioning. Thing is you can wash your hair in other things other than detergent -based shampoo. I'm something of a know it all, and I have never heard on winging or wrapping hair around starter locs. Floss, yes, a decoration. The top will loc beautifully. from what I know, baby dreads are just new and not fully locked and pretty, yet. Kind of geeky, awkward teenagers on locs. read the stickied threads. We've covered this many times. Bottom line, don't let this woman touch your hair.
she did locks for tourists.. in othgerwords shed rip them off locks shouldntr be bought they should be kepy clean the wrapping other hair well what she was trying to sell you was a weave, or hair extensions if left in ya yuopid get some locks, but ythered be adistinct difference between the fake wrapped hair andthe natural new growth do not pay anyone to goive you what nature will give you naturaly step 1 to natural locks throw away your comb step 2 wash weekly at least or more often with a resifue free soap step 3 wait a long time step 4 seperate the dreads as they form to prevent them from combining thats all step by step for backcombed dreads step 1 sectiom the hair then ba kcomb the sections knottyboy amnd dreadheadhq both have vidios that explain this priocess but ignore everything about wax and products only follow the actual backcombing instructions srep 2 follow the steps abive for natural dreads (and dont use the elastic bands morethen a couple days) alternative step by step for natural take a setuisn of wet hair, twist it tightly, stick on sa bead forcing it upwards till it sticks choose a bead with a small enough hole that it sticks fairly close to the end though.. follow the ibstrictions for natural above if u choose to backcomb, fo it once only..u can do it yourself, but u mihht want help because armdsd get tired and its hard to see the back of your head uopi can do a gentlyer form of backcombing eith just your fingers twist a section of hair and with your fingers tease it pusthing the haior towards the root while gripping the tip yightluy.. whatever methid u choose wearring a wool hat alot helps
all i know when i started these was...dont comb and dreads happen that was all, so thats wht i didof i washed only once or twice a year they woulda druven me crazy and got cut long lonb ago alotta ppl make the mistake of asking someone whos got too perfect locks ones over proccessed and fake as can me..synthetic extentions crichetted rolled and pressed into perfectly unifoem perfectky round and straight dreads withiut a single hair outta place they ask then how to get dreads like theyres and instantly theyre in to be scammed spending hundreads rught off the bat (weve hbeard up to 450$ then every 2 weeks needing maintanance (another 150 every 2 weeks) and after 3 months or so theyre fake dreads are just twisted stucky waxy mnesses that cist over $1000 and need to be comned out or cut off dreading is nearly effortless.. u can pit in effort of u choose but often that does more harm then good washing creates knots as long as u diont condition.. if u wash weekly or more often foir a year and do nothing else yoiyud have dreads not just hair all yoyes dtogether and gross and a scalp thats disgustinbg and itchy
Thanks everybody who left a comment. I appreciate your participation in my thread. *bthizle1 *drumminmama she told me not water at all during that time...6-12 months. Baby locks appear in any search engine. Take a look. I'm going to follow your advice. Thanks man! * soaringeagle First, nice dreads... She is not trying to put extension on my head. She will be wraping the long of my own hair. My hair is going to be covered by natural hair. Not longer than that. Let's see if I understand. I just leave my hair to knot itself. no brushing at all. Nothing added to my hair. It's amazing for me to imagine that the hair will lock by itself...without adding anything. *nympfsue Don't worry I will not be without washing my hair. I'm so clean. By the way, nice pics I think my mistake was to want dreads perfectly organized, and automaticly. Now I know there is not shortcut for dreads. Thanks a lot to everybody. I will start to grow my dreads naturally... ENIGMAH
dreads are the way hair naturakly is unless u prevent dreads from happening of haor wull dread if you do nothing then why would you pay someone to wrap someone elses hait atound yoiurs, then let youir hair get so frossand nasty that yoiur scalp starts to rot all u gotta do to dread is wash it..washing helps it dread, not the othber way around just when u wash wash the scalp only, dont run yoiur fingers through the haor rince the spap through though they'll form slowly natitrraly of u backcomb u can look like u got dreads soojer but they';ll stiull need toime to knot on theyre own
actually, mine were "encouraged" with an original backcomb and palm rolls. but my hair is stick straight with NO body, so sebum travels down well (which is natural conditioner and a few absolute baby locs slipped right out (ergo, I went for a cluster rather than a head with some straight areas.) best locs I had started as wraps. As someone who manages to catch hair in all sorts of places (windows seat belt retractions, doors, the wheels on my office chair, oven door, trike wheels --ooowwwwwch, a cd tray etc--this is sort of funny written out) , I have to ask, how do you keep your locs clear of the wheels? Do you have a pull back or updo normally?
ahaha i lost 8 inches to 2 feet off many from wrappin round acxles being run over and stepped on if i know im goin long distances and racin down steep hills fast i tie em up..otherwise if they get tangled i just back up till they unwind.. i cant wait for oshinn to finnish my tam though so it wont be an issue
I saw a wooden "dread comb" meant to hold dreads in a bun-like position. You are a special case, and could possibly use a child sized pitchfork for the same!
