just got a turntable and my uncle lent me some records. Here's what I got:

Lou Reed - Rock n Roll Animal
Yes - Going for the One
    Gong - You
Ian Dury - New Boots and Panties
The Sisters Of Mercy - Floodland
Genesis - Selling England by The Pound
The Psychedelic Furs - all of this and nothing
Humble Souls- thoughts and sound paintings
    Frank Zappa - Sheik Yerbouti
    Talking Heads - Naked
    Fine Young Cannibals

Any thoughts or recommendations for similar music?

not bad. i would suggest getting into indie/alternative music. independent labels, sub pop, merge and even some bigger labels release the most modern vinyl pressings from some of todays best indie artists. that is, if your into spending a little more on new releases. the plus side to buying new music on vinyl is the often included free digital downloads as well as the demand for quality pressings in today's releases. Plus, indie albums tend to be more artistic with their cover art and often times releases will have beautiful gatefold covers and come with extras like 7" singles and CDs.

judging by your current eclectic collection of music, im sure you could easily dive right into some wolf parade or akron/family.. or maybe even some of radiohead's sought after vinyl pressings. one thing you most likely will never find is a bad pressing from a newer release because nowadays only hardcore music fans buy new vinyl and the record companies realize that we know the difference between what makes something an audiophile release and what is just a quick production run to get an album released in all formats (like they used to often do in the 90's).

there is more great new music than many people realize, and even though most people call it indie/alternative, the variety of music styles involved in the type of music im talking about are vast and there is a sound for everyone. i personally love the majority of it, and anyone who can get into it, will appreciate musical diversity alot more.

Of course, i'm a huge fan of classic vinyl as well. It's easier to accumulate a larger collection because they are cheaper. I guess that's why i have close to 1,000 in mine lol still, i appreciate new music just as much and i get all the new releases of albums that are any good. im an even bigger vinyl fanatic since i've been introduced to 180 gram releases and own the original and new re-releases of many of my favorites. i guess you could say its a good or bad thing. (depending on how much you value the amount of money you have as opposed to how many different pressings of a bob dylan album you have)

Anyway, here are some great sites for alternative music and indie vinyl -

Vinyl Collective - Great site for new vinyl releases. A nice social community on the message boards there as well.
Pitchforkmedia - THE media coverage site for alternative music. I check it every day.
Stereogum - another great alternative music site
    Take Away Shows

Wow! I wish my uncle would lend me vinyl like that. :p I don't think anyone in my family even knows who Frank Zappa is. And "Dancing With The Moonlit Knight" by Genesis (first song on that album) is I think one of the finest prog songs ever written, one of my personal favorites. Listen to it! Also "Firth of Firth", same album, has a great guitar solo.

If you liked that Lou Reed record, I would try his studio solo albums, and also The Velvet Underground. Do you like Uriah Heep, or maybe The Smiths?

Yes. I recomend checking out The Smiths. Personally I think The Queen Is Dead is their best. It's the high point of Morrisey's song writing, I believe. Meat Is Murder is really good as well.

I agree, The Queen Is Dead is the best place to start.

And if you can get any King Crimson on vinyl...do it!

The Velvet Underground & Nico - First album, best one to get into first
In the Court of the Crimson King fo' sho!

Also check out Rain Dogs by Tom Waits if your on an 80s alternative kick

BTW, has anyone ever seen the Velvet Underground & Nico pressing with the removable banana peel sticker that reveals a pink banana underneath?
I always wondered if that was meant to be a homosexual reference.

Very much so. The album was produced by Andy Warhol, and he was very much into putting gay men and other sexual things into his art. The little tagline next to the banana says Peel Slowly and See.

Great album. I think "Heroin" is the best song they ever wrote.

Thanks for the responses. I only have one stereo for it and it doesn't work very well. So far I've heard Gong and Humble Souls. Both were great. I heard someone mention Tom Waits. I was thinking of borrowing one of my uncle's Waits albums next. I'll definitely be checking out The Velvet Underground, I've already heard Crimson ( not on vinyl though), and I plan on listening to Genesis next.

edit: listening to Selling England By The Pound right now and it's amazing.
