first, i'm not really combing my hair back long before i stop using conditioning shampoos. and my hair, im on my 3rd month now of not using shampoos/conditioners, no combing(of course)and still, it looks like as STRAIGHT as fucking HELL. im really frustrated, i could post some pics but my digicam is wacked now. but im telling ya, NOTHING IS HAPPENING. i dont think i've done anything wrong either, i wash my hair once or twice a week, and take note, i dont run my fingers to my hair too. any advice? again, 3rd month of almost NOTHING forming. the frizz? its all going out after i sleep, thats how straight my hair is. clumps and all? after wetting it, gone! ..thats how it is. i may have this sickness called UNDREADABLE HAIR. fuck. im sooooo frustrated.
maybe play with it more. Not rake it, but twirl it around a finger, or roll nappy sections between fingers. but when it comes down to it most people say it takes a year or two to really lock up.
How long is your hair? Try sleeping with it in a hat. Change how often you wash it, either more or less often. As cargo says, play with it. Twist it into sections and rip knotts down into the sections.
^I had the exact same question... how long is it? ...and when you say you stopped using shampoo... what are you washing your hair with? Natural dreads take a reaaaaaally long time. 3 months isn't much time, especially if your hair is straight and kinda short (which I'd define as anything above shoulder length)
my hair was to my ass when i quit combing it. ive not done anything to it but rip the dreads when needed. its been almost 2 years and i still have quite a bit of hair that has yet to dread. yes dreading naturally as has been stated can be a very long process...
im not really wishing it to lock up cargo ,i just wish it would TAKE FORM. which unfortunately is not happening. gerasimus, mine is shoulder length generally. i'll try to do that. thanks. gaiabee, i wash mine with baking soda concoction, sometimes adding something up. and my! my hair really is super straight, like that of commercial shampoo models, but of course now, its kinda matte, just not KNOTTY but matte. hippiehillbilly, a vey long process indeed. *sigh
just to give you a idea of how long it took.. here is a couple weeks after i quit combing,(scuse the wood chips i was cutting fire wood) and this is after a year (note the major shrinkage and how much was still loose) i have no idea what it looks like now as i dont look in the mirror and havent had anyone take pictures, but i do know there is still a lot of loose hair on my head.. to be honest i really dont care how it looks,i quit combing my hair for convenience, not to look good or make any kind of statement.. the point is,if its "natural" dreads ya want, just be patient and let it happen "naturally",,anything else just wouldnt be "natural" now would it?
anyway. i guess tis is how young people react. im just 19 years. haha. impatience and moronic. thanks for that frame btw.
now lets open up human nature and human thinking. what would you do if you're trying to do something yet nothing seems to materialize? there there.
last message before going to sleep. (its past midnight here and have to bank some sleep before weekends end.) i admire your hair bro. looks extremely natural. i want that type. now i'll see that in my dreams. night.
my nature is to continue my path until i see results no matter how long or painful that journey seems to be.. but i wouldnt expect most to be of the mindset that i am...
try dsswitching from the baking soda i found that makes my hair extremely soft anbd extra frizzy which meands some knots loosen up and unravel. ddind a few beads can help quicken the pricess too
i dunno. 1979 right? my favorite number. from "Death From Above 1979", Sebastien Grainger's birth year. silly me. xD its actually 1989. now i know that putting less effort makes it less prone to tangling so i think i may need to work it out. like twisting and stuffs.

I kept a note of how many of mine were forming and when. This is for no combing, but washing with normal shampoo almost everyday, no conditioner. Just to give you an idea, as all hair is different. 5/5/2008 - 0 locks (The day I said to myself, no more combing) 11/6/2008 - 12 18/6/2008 - 15 07/7/2008 - 18 18/7/2008 - 18 Today I must have about 30-40 baby dreads.
sdh... for straight hair, shoulder length is still quite short to start seeing quick progress. My hair was straight, but quite long when I started, which is the only reason why I got a head start with locking... but after 2.5 years I *still* have unlocked parts. I could try to force it along, but I don't because I want to see how my hair ends up naturally (which may ultimately include some straight hair mixed with dreads - but so be it). I think that I think of time and dreads differently then a lot of the younger folk on this forum, because while some might say that 2.5 years is a long time I still think they're very young and have a long way to go. So 3 months? That's down-right neonatal ;-)
