so i was spun cookies the other night and a friend asked me a question, "what do you think keesey meant when he said we graduated from the acid test"?" im intrested to see what yall think
I dont understand, did kesey say that he and his group graduated, or society graduated, or humanity graduated, or what? i sure havnt graduated and most people havnt even enrolled
An excerpt from Wavy Gravy's 'Something Good For A Change: Random Notes On Peace Thru Living.' "And that's when i passed the acid test. You understand, when you get to the very bottom of the human soul-to the place where the nit slams up against the grit and you're sinking pretty bad-somehow you manage to reach down and help someone who is sinking worse than you are. Well, that's when everybody gets high and you don't need any LSD and you don't need jewels or light. Jesus and Buddah were right! All you need is . . . love. Unconditional love."
What Kesey meant by graduating from the "acid test" was not what a lot of people think. It didn't mean stop using acid (I think that's what bill was getting at) or anything like that. I have the book, but I don't know exactly where it mentions it, so I'll give you what I have from memory ( check it before using it ). When one "graduates the acid test" he or she is moving onto a different... plane of drug usage. Different reasons, different expectations, everything. It is no longer a "lets go get fucked up," nor is it a "lets sit around boring Leary style and 'search' our minds." A graduate of the acid test was I suppose somewhat enlightened, although not in the concentional sense. If I have time to look through "Acid Test" I'll give a quote, but I don't think that iwll happen anytime soon. Hope that helps. The Mushroom Man
