I would say Miles, not only for his music but his leadership and furthering the careers of many great players.
Miles man. Do I really need to explain? If there was ever a man who left an overall footprint on jazz and the music world in general, it was him. Not to say there weren't plenty other influential names, but you get what I'm sayin'.
bitches brew makes miles davis a god john coltrane was just epic and charles mingus was the shit. I love all those musicians, but these three mofos make my day.
Out of those I picked Mingus. All I have to say on the matter is "Pithecanthropus Erectus." If Thelonius Monk was on there I would pick him because of his odd rhythms and use of dissonance.
i picked Miles. just a personal preference. my old jazz teacher had a bunch of old Miles LPs that he gave me. and i just really got into him through that. his music is centered around melody, and i just find tht wierd for a trumpet player to do, because trumpet players tend to be centered around "I can play higher than you. I can play faster than you. I can play louder than you." but miles was just like screw that; I'm gonna make music. it's like i always say, "taste before chops" but to be fair: -LOVE coletrane!!!! I always wish that i could play more like coletrane (that goes for all his different periods of music from his bebop to his free jazz) -Mingus is SICK! -Charlie Parker -Duke Ellington i love those guys
