Hey all, I don't really know much about jazz, its all right but i'm more of a rocknroller but then one day on the radio i heard these cool sounding tunes, dissonant, crazy, improvisational and they just blew me away. to find a term for what i heard i went to wikipedia and this is what i found... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Free_jazz anyways what i'm asking for is for some music recommendations to check this out further. THANKS JOn
sun ra electric masada later john coltrane cecil taylor rasshan roland kirk ornette colman marc ribot nels cline albert ayler
Also check out Eric Dolphy. Although he is not as free as some of the people mentioned above he is always a fun listen. I would start off with "Out There"
Jack Dejohnette Dave Holland John Zorn and most of his groups...actually, you should check out some of the musicians on his record label Tzadik...you'll find a lot of interesting free jazz.
Art Ensemble of Chicago Fred Anderson Hamid Drake The Lounge Lizards New Klezmer Trio And yes, Sun Ra and John Zorn.
the softs machines (psychedelic free jazz) arthur doyle (a prayer for peace) john stevens derek bailey (might be hard to enjoy at first) hank bennink and of course coltrane, dolphy, sunra (awesome), and most of all john zorn (he did a lot of stuffs, really interesting and great, electric masada is really "jazzcore", and masada trios are delightful )
Machine Gun - Peter Brötzmann Nothing Is - Sun Ra improwizje - Rafal Mazur & Keir Neuringer (which can be download legally and for free here: http://www.insubordinations.net/releases35.html)
A great intro to free jazz is Ascension by John Coltrane. Usually I introduce people to the concept of free jazz through A Love Supreme, but since you seem to dig the heavy stuff, check out uh, Pharaoh Sanders. I would mention more, but they seem to be covered already.
If you really want to go in depth as to what the musicians are doing, the book Free Jazz by Ekkehard Jost is really helpful. It really helped me open up my ears as to what's going on in the music.
