do you avoid getting in them? I hate getting chemicals on my body anyways, but I'm assuming that the chlorine can't be very good for your dreadlocks. I'm also assuming that if you do get in one you just have to make sure you rinse them out properly. what are your opinions and experiences?
I don't go in pools anymore... and did you know chlorine is one of the main components of human blood?
to be honest, i dont think i even went swimming in a pool when i had my dreads. i tihnk it was mostly creeks and stuff
ive goine in pools lil bit but i definately preffer creeks and mountain streams and even mudd puddles but if its very hot i'll take what i can get..city fountains to raging rapids
I don't like how my hair feels after I've been in the pool with chlorine. I generally avoid them and prefer the beaches. But there aren't any sunny beaches up here in colorado :/ so the pool is fine every once in a while.
thanks for that interesting fact, stalk! had no idea. however, pools have different chemicals in them as well. I far prefer the ocean myself, but the reason I'm asking this question is that I have to go in the pool every now and then, and would like to know what you think of pools + dreads. I don't care where you guys like to swim
I recently went swimming in a pool and i can't say i noticed difference in my dreads other than they get quite frizzy afterwards, but water does that regardless, oh and they were a tad dry. I never really thought about it. Not sure what prolonged exposure to chlorine will cause though...
i can't see how it'd really hurt them much, considering that a lot of peeps bleach their dreads over and over and over again. so i think the chemical concentration in a pool shouldn't be too bad for them. i'd rinse REALLY well, maybe do a full wash right after each pool exposure, just to get the chems out as much as possible. but shouldn't = dread death i don't think!
I go swimming in a chlorine pool, usually twice a week. I don't have any choice as there aren't any chlorine-free ones nearby and we are about as far away from the sea as you can get in the UK ... It has actually helped my baby dreads along a little as the chlorine is quite drying and so is helping the hair knot together. I make sure I rinse VERY well as soon as I get out of the pool and then wash my hair with my most moisturising showergel (which isn't really that good if you compare it to actual shampoos...but it's one I make a point of not using any other time as it tends to unknot my hair too much LOL).
ive read somewhere that it doesnt really matter, as long as the hair is rinsed really well afterwards to get rid of most of the chlorine i also read that if you have bleached hair and it goes green in the pool, putting tomato ketchup on it will remove the green. but dont trust me on that, you might end up with technicolour hair..
One thing to think of is.. chlorine kills germs. I know when I used to have bad acne, a dip in the pool would actually help knock back some of that bacteria and reduce the acne. I would almost tend to think that if your dreads had any sort of bacteria, mildew, etc, chlorine from time to time might be just the ticket :cheers2:
i use the pool, but i just kind of paddle, dont really swim lol, as it splashes my dreads. i just tie my hair up and look stupid to avoid getting my dreads chlorinated... im the only guy i know of with dreads at my gym so im used to odd stares lol
Yeah, all that pesky oxygen always trying to oxidise my nice natural skin, and don't even get me started on water, keep that fucking solvent away from me.
