I have been pouring over the posts on the forums, and have to ask a couple of questions. Why do people think people with long hair are hippies? Why do people think you have to have long hair if you are a hippie? A bit of stereotyping going on? Do you have long hair? Why? Why not?
I have short hair, I'm a girl. I find that being a hippie is being non-conformist. In the 60's long hair was "against" the system, specially for boys (dirty long hair, so for girls). Nowadays most girls have long hair, so I find nothing special about it. Also, I think that it's bullshit. People say it's "feminine" and elegant to have long hair, if you're a girl. But I (and I'm being modest) am the living proof that it is all crap. I'm feminine and elegant, and loving it.
Yes- stereotyping... and those who think themselves to be hippies only after growing out their hair (guys) some conforming to stereotypes. The thing is that anyone who would fit a hippie mindset would hardly consider themselves to be a hippie. To me this is not something one makes a conscious decision to become but something that one might realize that one has become only after looking back. Some folks who have a frame of mind that would be associated with hippie actually prefer a shorter hairstyle for themselves and should not be expected to change that in order to please someone else. Giving up the visual nuts and bolts of ones identity for the purpose of group affiliation is pretty much un-hip-- even if the group one wishes to be associated with is hippies. It isn't far removed from donning a stage wardrobe in order to play a role in a play in order to convince an audience that you are someone you're not. End ramble
People have occasionally tried to use hippie as a derogatory term for me, but I just let it roll off my shoulders, haha~ After all, I visit sites like this. I guess I am a bit of a modern day hippy. I do rock the long hair, and much longer than I normally see "regular" girls with- mine is right under the bum. I just like it, and it has been a way people have recognized me for a while now. I have a lot of fun messing with it, trying different styles, using it as a cover when it is chilly, and just letting nature run its fingers through it, when the wind blows. It is a wonderful tactile sensation, and I find it to be beautiful. Letting my freak flag fly is also a way of meeting like-minded people around here- it's fun to start up conversations with the natty dread folks, the other long haired guys and girls, and just random long hair admirers. I find that when my hair is long, life can be just a little more fun~ for what it's worth, anyways!
I have cut my hair twice in my lifetime and thats all , but mine is a cultural issue and being true to my bloodline , not because i am a hippie...my best friend and father to my kids had long hair to his butt when we hooked up , but he had to cut it for employment reasons. I think We hippies let our hair grow because that was just a natural act and cutting it would interfere with the natural order of it growing. I am able to sit on my hair now , it lays on my thighs.
I have long hair(Freak Flag), but that's not what it takes, its the love of the land, (Earth) and all life on it. We are here to be one with it and grow above war and decay it is not just ours but all life. With respect of it and love of our fellow creatures we are family with all and must take that path......... Peace to you friend
I love very long hair - but does it make me a hippie? I don't know - it depends on what the hippie is... Metal, Gothic - they too have long hair, but they are no hippies...
these days long hair is encouraged at least for women and its the relative norm... so I feel much more rebellious over the fact that I have short, crazy hair... but my bf and I are actually doing a hair peace to see how long we can grow our hair without cutting it out of boredom or something... so far a week. our hair is so short though.
Why do people think people with long hair are hippies? Some people are just morons that have nothing better to do but label and judge others. Why do people think you have to have long hair if you are a hippie? Same answer as above A bit of stereotyping going on? a lot of dudes have longer hair nowadays, people just call me hippie because i tell 'em that im hippie and proud. Do you have long hair? Why? Why not? Hell yes! because i was never allowed to have it because my day. oh and it is wicked awesome. he always said boys should have short, neatly trimmed hair. He used to hold me down and cut my hair until one night my mom let him have it. Punched his ass out! But you know what is funny? a couple of years ago i found his driver's liscence from 1973 and his hair is way past his shoulders. ha!
