It seems a lot of people don't realize you can get pure, 200 proof ethanol quite easily from a lot of online suppliers. And for cheap too. http://secure.sciencecompany.com/Ethyl-Alcohol-Anhydrous-AKA-Ethanol-16oz-P6658C670.aspx Enjoy, never drink it, and be careful in all your experiments!!!
You can't buy or import pure ethanol in the U.S. without paying the beverage taxes. Even Aldrich must collect the excise tax, according to their catalog. If the word "proof" is being used, it probably is being treated as a beverage, not a solvent. There's no way to get non-denatured ethanol legally without paying that tax. A couple percent of IPA or Methanol mixed with the ethanol will cost 5 times less.
And, for those who don't know what's the deal with this issue: Our governments, at some point, decided to poison a product otherwise fit for human consumption to make sure they would be able to collect tax on that product.
Yea...I now realize that its use for extracting chemicals is limited...woops haha Some things can use it though, if you let it completely evaporate, but I realize for, say, extracting LSA it's useless.
You can let the ethanol evaporate on its own but you will be eating some pyridine, or it's ok to drink 5mls of methylated spirit the 1 we have in australia anyway No big deal in small doses
old shiners around these parts called it "mountain dew" and it will take the paint off your table. yep, some can drink it but it'll likely cause rot-gut. you can distill your own ethanol with a pressure cooker FYI.
