so i started growing out my hair at the start of 8th grade, and when i was between sophomore and junior year of highschool i got this awesome job as a juggler with 6 flags ( yes im a juggler!) but they made me cut off all my hair, apparently its unprofessional for guys to have long hair and be freaking jugglers. stupid. retarded. i hate that i had to do it, but man that was a sweet job.
i havent cut it since, and that was a little over 2 years ago, so my hair is middle of my back-ish.
ive had a few problems in the past with finding jobs with having long hair, but nothing really to serious, brush it, tie it back and most employers are fine with it ( most)
how hard is finding employment with having dreads.....?
i work 3 three jobs right now(random juggling gigs, YMCA, and lions gate event center) , all three of which are cool with dreads as far as i know.
but im also trying to move up in life and maybe just work 2 jobs ( juggling gigs areant really work, those are fun) and one real job that pays like more than 8.75 an hour.....
im also bearing in mind that i live 20 minutes away from both denver and boulder....
but yea, jobs, anythoughts opinions exipierences to share?

If your qualified for the job and keep your dreads clean most people [in my experience] dont care. Ive only had 2 employers turn me down before the first time I had dreads about 6 years ago. One was a natural foods store which Ive boycotted ever since, and the other was Yosemite National park....get this....so I was living in the park...well bumming it in the park...and decided that having money would be nice...so I went into human Resources to inquire about a job. my dreads at this point were almost at mid back and oh so gawgeous. the HR lady told me they were hiring but had a no dread policy. So I did the unthinkable....I chopped them off! Yikes! I went back in the next day and the bastards had filled the position!!!!!! So there I was bald and jobless....no fun. Moral of the story....dont ever sell yourself short for a job. If an employer doesnt want to hire you based on yor hair then you shouldnt want to work for them anyways!!!!!!

this is quite true, and believe me im only working 2 real jobs to pay for college/gas/insurance/living etc. i do as many juggling gigs as i can, but im not makin enough from them to quit the other two jobs....
the only advancing i want to do in life is to follow what i love, do what im passionate about, cause thats what life is about.

    Tokyo Joe's.
everyone is a freak, in a good way!
Right now, employers can be prickish about looks since there's a lot of folks looking in the Front Range.

Maybe: Whole Foods/ Wild Oats or music venues (I'll warn you, I've heard some of the owners are hell to work for coughjaybianchicough)
    busking,

believe it or not unicycles are not a bad way to travel from state to state either..i never rode myine from coast to coast but had all up and down the east coast
but as your dreads get longer u will need a taller and taller 1 to keep em outta the spokes\

tallest i ever rode wasjust 8 feet but was fun

I would think being skilled enough to be able to work at a circus would be a dream job for many. I do think that if they are tied back and neat, few employers can discriminate. But maybe that's just how things are here in California?

Well living in KY the male standards for hair seems to be shaved or neatly trimmed. I rarely see anyone with long hair anymore that is a male. I also work at the local fire station and they all give me shit about it, but I just think they are jealous because I have what they don't/can't hahaha.

    or stilts!
but yes, the circus school teacher thing is a dream job of mine, as well as being a music teacher.
or a professional movie score composer.

I've worked for 4 different Veterinary Hospitals. I have dreads past my shoulders, a few visible and large tattoos, as well as multiple facial piercings. I've been a veterinary technician, receptionist and asst. office manager.

Veterinary clinics/hospitals tend to be privately owned by 1-3 vets and almost EVERYONE I've worked with had tattoos or something crazy going on with their hair. At one point I had bright pink hair. Most vet clinics dont mind, I do have to "tone it down" at work, but they let me get away with a ton more then I could working retail or for a major company.

Go see if your local animal hospital is hiring, they almost always are, and they pay real well. Colorado has the biggest vet technician training school in the US so you might have some luck. And 90% of the time you dont need any prior experience.

you should check the veterinary field out and give it a try!!

    just some food for thought
