I used to have 69 lovely locks and one day decided to do the unthinkable... It has been almost two years since my dready days, and though I miss them terribly, I love my smooth, silky hair too. I've decided to start & maintain few dreads here and there, (I have about 8) so I can enjoy both (and now I carry the Mama image, so I feel it's a good balance). Has anyone else ever done this?

I committed a lot of time to working on my dreadies in the past, until they finally reached the independent stage. I think my biggest challenge is going to be keeping the straight hair from attaching to the base of my dreadies and keeping the dreadies from being conditioned when washing the rest of my hair.

Even if it fails, it'll be a challenge I'll enjoy! If anyone has done this and has pics, I'd love to see!

nothins nicer then a momma with a full head of dreads
but if u wanna just have a few thats fine too
just dont condition alot till theyre nice n tight
and when u comb jusy t pull the dreads outta the way
personaly though i think u should just let em do what they want and get a heasd full of dreads

u cn leave your legs to get the fine silky hair :)

When I had my daughter I felt pressure to conform to a mommy image...I tried it for a sec and was miserable. Now Im just me and my daughter has caught onto my inner happiness and shines brighter than I do most the time!!!!!! Anywho....Im dreading my whole head but as of now my head is only partially dreaded because Im doing it naturally...so uh heres some pics for ya! Shine on!

Yikes--I never said I was conforming to the Mommy image. I was just saying I had dreadies before and they took a lot of time and maintenance to get started, I just don't have the time now.

My daughter & I still attend all the same music festivals I used to go to, dance our asses off at all the local shows and we go to the park about 4 times a week for yoga/hoop class! I'm still heavily involved in the music scene & I haven't changed anything about myself since becoming a Mom--I've embraced having the chance to let my little one shine in this beautiful world! Never have I once even thought about changing because I'm now a mother...

srry foe misreading :) can i ask how u started b4? backcombing palm rolling crochetting wax dreads take time yes but..work?
only if u insist on doing innexxasary work

stop having tome to prevent dreads..make youirself too busyy to comb..and they'll happen

besudes washing the total maintanance time for an entire month should be between 3 and 10 minutes

some ppl though are addicted to having to do something so spend hours a day obsessively rubbing and rolling...
you dont gotta do that..at all

u can cut yout total mainyanance tome to the time u spend in the shower and 1-2 minutes now and then

After each wash, I'd palm roll and separate each dread... no wax, some back-combing of the base to start, but lots of time rolling and keeping the bases from growing together. I realize it's not necessary, but I wanted to keep them that way. Eventually the hair was trained at the scalp and it became much easier, but it took a lot of time to start.

Dreads are beautiful--in my little town, they are almost "mainstream" and it's great to see. I just think it'd be fun to be able to keep some loose hair to play with while having a few dreadies at the same time.

Goodluck with your dreads, Mandyland--you have such beautiful blonde hair, they are going to look outstanding!

Great link. I'll try to avoid the dread mullet, as the one guy is sporting--but he gets points for creativity! :)
