ok well i know im not the only female who experiences terrible periods along with PMS and all. but let me explain....my period seriously takes me out for about 2 weeks...the week i have it and the week before it....so thats almost half the month! i have horrible mood swings, very irritable, appetite gets messed up, my periods are heavy and i get bad cramps, although sometimes theyre barely there and others i feel like im giving birth! basically, im miserable when im on it and i make others around me miserable bc my mood is so up and down. i was on birth control for a while but i cannot take it bc im in the minority of women who cant deal with the hormones...in other words, it makes me depressed and i suffer from depression and anxiety as it is. does anyone know of any supplements or anything that has worked for them or is a possibility for improving my dern period symptoms? any help, insight, personal experiences, etc. would be a great help :) thanks for your time!

    much love-mel :)

A lady my mom works with gets period cramps very badly too (as do I, the only thing that works for me is if I sleep even if it's only for half an hour) and she went to the Whole Foods store and bought some....I forget the name but I bet if you tell someone there about it, they can help you find it. Some kind of herb or flower or something and you pour it in a drink and it's supposed to work very well

There is an actual "Woman Tea" you can get at herbal stores.. be warned, it tastes horrible. I too get really, really bad periods, and I've found a few things that help:

    1. Magic Bag (or some other kind of heating pad)
    2. Very gentle yoga stretches - VERY gentle
    3. Any kind of hot tea (the woman tea works, but it's gross...) that doesn't have caffeine in it - the caffeine is just going to make the mood swings worse
    4. I have a prescription for a painkiller called Ponstan. It's really really good, but totally potent so you can't take it during the day. Take it on a full stomach (a very full stomach) and then go directly to sleep. You'll sleep like a baby, (it's got stuff in it to make you sleep) and the pain will be eased a lot.
    5. Grab a partner, and get them to do this stretch with you: you lay on your back, with your knees bent (as if you're about to do a sit up). They kneel beside you or at your feet, and cross their hands at the wrists. Starting at your pubic bone, have them gently apply pressure to various spots that hurt. Make sure they do both sides, or else the relief will be unbalanced. This is a great stretch. It hurts like a bitch at first, but breathe through it, and you'll start to feel a lot of relief.

That's basically what I do... I'm sure other people here have even better ideas! Good luck though. Sorry I couldn't help much with the mood swings, everyone is so different...
