I'm really looking forward to leaving around the 25 of oct. My problem is that I want to go to Austin but I will have my dog with me so I can't take a bus. Hitching in Tx is illegal and don't want to get caught. I have money but no car. I'm going to be eventually making my way to California where I grew up. I'm thinking of walking and I know that good things will happen for me but i'm a bit nervous. How can I travel with my dog?
Do you have time? Seriously, walking can be rewarding, healthy, and fun. Start slow and easy, build yourself and your dog up to it, and you can do 20 miles a day in easy terrain. It's a great way to see the country.
Texas is a big state. I'm very sure you can get away with hitchhiking. Read the sticky in Camping/Outdoor Living.
digihitch.com good place for infro on hithiking i think its only illegal to hitch on interstates, but you can still get away with it if you hitch on the on-ramp at the edge of town but many prefer going state highways and minor roads, since it aint really illegal, and you might meet some locals. I plan on hitching come next summer, and if you happen to live alone the west side of houston (especially katy) try going down I-10 to sealy and hitch up highway 36 or if you want to go directly to austin, hitch I-10 if possible, and start going north on highway 71, its a little further west than hwy 36 i plan on taking that route when i head out, but it is for my first time, but it would be interesting to see how another fares on that route.
I live in North Houston near the Woodlands so I was thinking about going out on the 290. It goes through some towns on the way and is not the interstate. Its a straight shot to Austin or so I'm told. I've never been there so this is all new to me.
Hey fellow Houston-ite! It's not illegal to hitchhike in Texas. It's illegal to do it from in the street; the shoulders are not considered part of the interstate. Have your ID though because they will harass the fuck out of you. Getting to Austin is super easy. Almost everyone I know that regularly commutes between Houston and Austin picks up hitch hikers. Besides, who doesn't like dogs?
Hey thanks for the info! I can't wait to get going, trying to get all the cash I can together. I've heard that my pup might make it easier ot get rides.
just be careful when your going down 290. Me and my family got lost one time when we were heading to austin. not sure how that happened, but we ended up on a long country road in some little settlement. but it shouldnt be that hard, lol
You might also search the local craigslist for someone driving that way. Or post an ad yourself. Some people, if you're not bringing too much, would probably be open to the idea. Try -http://houston.craigslist.org/rid/
