Is it a good idea to rub your hand around your head in circles in the early stage of the natural dread process or is it damaging to the hair?

i do that and i already have established dreads. it helps dread up the roots, and really does feel good! helps with the itchies, lol!

I've been very aggressive with my hair rubbing for 17 months and my dreads are totally healthy and undamaged. Don't worry about it.

if you want this to work many times better than put some wool between you hair and fingers...., and press the wool against the area of your scalp where the dread connects. this works phenomanaly but i think it is potentialy damaging. no proof of that yet, but dont say i didnt warn you once a few years go by.

If you have healthy hair it's not damaging at all.

your dreads do have a natural way to lock up closer and closer to the root as the time goes by, so the technique above is not really a natural way of dreading. in fact, it works so well that i would put it in the same catagory as backcombing, assuming you did a good job of it.

i do that every time i get out of the shower, the roots mature much faster that way.

? i dont understand what u mean gg the roots mature much faster?
i never do this i wash mine anddont do a thing except maybe shalke em alittle
and i doint think mt roots are any less mature then the rest of my dreads (except the 1/2 inch closest to the scalp)
try not doing it for a month and i bet yas dont really see any difference

i agree with soaring eagle. as once your dreads are fully mature they with take care of themselves

i saw a huge difference. i got lazy and didn't do any rubbing at my roots for a good 4 or 5 weeks. it looked like shit, i had little flyaways everywhere that kept trying to dread in the wrong dreads, and all that hair was completely undreaded. my scalp also hurt, because the hairs weren't moving much at all.

i started rubbing the roots again, and stuff's locking up now again.

i think my hair just has a hard time dreading, and this is a way to help my hair along, plus it helps keep them separated better.

    and besides
what dreadhead doesn't rub their head?

    come on...
the whole "all natural all the time don't do anything" thing is a little whack.

Do you have any problems with making newly knotting dreads come undone when you do this? I can see both outcomes happening, that is making some tighter but then rubbing in the wrong direction or something and untangling others?
