I was just curious about what others think of all the "rainbow revenue" that individuals or small groups of people make off of Rainbow. I have seen various people offering movies, books of course, photos, music, and even some Frisbees on Ebay! Since when did it become a common occurrence of selling Rainbow... by filming the gatherings and putting a $9.99 - $19.99 price tag... on discs with shitty art labels? And of course... with love! I have noticed it more and more. It seems like some people go to the gatherings to film specifically. On another note... Bored and found WebsiteOutlook. Pretty interesting. Rob's site is listed... Daily Ad Revenue? Wonder if that site is real. Almost $3,000 a year according to the site. Has not really changed much over the years. The welcome here sites says almost $1,400 a year. Not even gonna touch on how much money you can make per year off of being "hip" Too bad we could not get a Rainbow site that could generate a quarter million to the magic hat at each year's gathering
WelcomeHome has no ads. I'm quite certain Rob doesn't make a dime from it, if anything it costs him money. Probably one reason why he hasn't messed with it for a while. And what's a USD? Wouldn't surprise me if WelcomeHere is putting money into one of those "Peace Conspiracy" folks pockets. I don't use the site. I don't trust it. I've seen them deliberately post bad info before, and got a bunch of kids lost. If the book you are speaking of is Niman's book, well, writers need to eat too, and college professors don't get paid all that much. It's badly in need of a second edition, BTW. If you don't want to buy it, borrow a copy from the library, but remember, they had to buy it. The movies and CDs? That just plain sucks.
I am a songwriter, and I am rainbow. I make cds... some of the music on these cds are specifically rainbow songs... What I think is that rainbow first and foremost is FREE!!!! I accept donations, encourage trading, but in the end music (and especially rainbow) is free... so if you like my music, I'll probably give you a CD even if you don't have shit... if I'm broke, and on my last 5 cds, I might not give you one, but I'm working on ways to make it easier to download this stuff... point being... rainbow is free... rainbow also takes donations and "spare any change?" sharing is caring... and if there are shwagg people out there making a bunch of loot off of family... well, the most important thing I can do is live rightly and set a good example... usually I find myself busy taking the huge *#%#ing plank out of my own face... if I see money changers in the temple however.....
i think that it is none of my business and that i have no clue what these people are spending their "rainbow revenue" on. could be funding a traveler on their way to different rainbow events, could be going in the magic hat. i wish them success and happiness.
If you write a song, and pay for studio time to make a professional quality recording, you deserve to be paid for the enjoyment of your creation, and the studio time. Anybody who makes a live recording at a gathering and sells it be the Schwiggity-schwag!
very true turnip... I, however, record and produce CDs like everything else... for FREE.... "MONEY? We don't need no stinking money!" if only these jokers(cough::capitalists::cough::consumers) got the point.... that's ok... as far as the economic climate is concerned living for free is going to become very "valuable" on your resume.... Love and YOU!! p.s. I was hanging out at cougar hotsprings out here in Oregon a week or so ago... and met a brother named "Sundancer" who saw your bumpersticker and was like "I know that guy!!" it's a small world after all
I have never seen any ads on Rob's site... which is one of the things that made me wonder about the adsense figure. U.S. Currency Notice that I put "of course" next to books in my statement. Writing a book is an experience that takes an effort unlike what I am speaking of. I wish there were more books out there. You really do not see many authors making money off of books that are not mainstream. I know there are variants. How long do you think it will be before we see a "Rainbow Family Cookbook"? Publications costs. Printing costs. Quality of the material. Many factors that make books an almost entirely different issue that is not so exploitative... yet just beginning to with the internet and technology. Not what I am referring to.... such as a person recording their abilities and talent. I am referring to individuals (or groups) who seem to think that going to a Rainbow Gathering and recording drum circles is an acceptable thing to put a price on. I doubt many people are even aware the are being recorded and cashed in on. Seems to be a starting fad over the past few years. Go home and slap it on a computer, burn it to disc, put some shitty artwork on some cheap labels and pimp it on various websites. Videos? People taping the gatherings and then selling the "experience"? Should people be able to run around and film a documentary that might be profitable? And... not let anyone know? What about a kitchen that wants to make and create a documentary about themselves at the gathering... and the people involved are constantly talking about how much money they could make off of doing it. Talking about doing it at every gathering so the can build a video empire? People have hidden behind the "public property" factor before. "The Girls of Rainbow" videos that are collections of naked girls who were filmed without their knowledge... are a prime example. Would it be ok to come and film a "Rainbow Porno" at the gathering? What about artwork? If someone sat with a high definition video camera and time lapsed every vehicle that came into or left the gathering for 1 month... and then hid behind the "artwork" factor. Never mind that every license plate would be recorded. Picture books? BUT HEY... in this world the "free" have nothing to hide from eh? :cheers2: I am not asking what people think of what they spend their profit on... more on what they are making it off of. More along the thought process of what I was referring to. Now what if someone set up a huge site dedicated to the "history" of Rainbow and it's current happenings... then adsensed and sold advertising? Now they could utilize cafepress to create merchandise from the history of the gatherings. Sell coffee mugs, t- shirts, and posters of the specific gatherings. Hell... have a mug for every year and a special piece of art commemorating that year. Have reproduction back issues of every rainbow guide available for purchase? Have to have the beer mugs, flasks, and shot glasses for the A campers? Would all that be perfectly fine? Only if it were a person that claimed to be "rainbow"... and not just some group of people who have never been to gatherings... but realize the potential of doing such? What if it involved a mass effort to copy right all the Rainbow oriented photos, art, and writings that are appearing on various sites and such... al of course done with a lot of thought put into legalities and royalties for various projects and potentials... for many a years to come? Strange what one might stumble upon
Our history has been up for sale for a few years now..... www.woodstockmuseum.com/1st_rainbow.html PR
For the most part, "Rainbow Girls Gone Wild " crap excluded, I believe it depends on the purpose of the recording, and where the money is going. Scholarly works, documentaries, journalism, informational materials, and the like, are OK by me. Recordings made for the purpose of entertainment are getting into the grey area. Entertainment recordings that violate the privacy of the recorded--And I mean "privacy" here in its colloquial meaning, not in a legal sense--run up lots of bad debt on your Karma Kard, and might just get you an ass-whuppin' upon which this occasional shantier of sena may well turn his back. Using the money from the sales of these works to pay for your travel expenses, or even your mortgage or your kid's tuition, is OK. Using it to make payments on your bass boat is not.
I'm not Vermin, but I will except bribes on his behalf. The baby the Next President of the United States is kissing is mine, though. And I had heard USFuSs had dynamited Cougar. Good to hear it's still there.
I don't like it when people film without permission from those being filmed and hopefully Karma will take care of any folks wanting to film hippies for absolute greed, but since various media outlet have taken pictures & placed pictures atop stories with unkind words having very little to do with the persons pictured, it's hard to begrudge those who sell Rainbow video or audio as long as they don't sell it in the Church. Many of the filmmakers believe that they are going to turn the world on to Rainbow by exposing us to the masses. Rainbow porn makers, even the softer 'party' variety, SUCK!!!!! Rainbow mechandise would be weird, mugs & all that, but I can see it happening. And legally, it would be all in the hands of those who own photos. & just for the technicality of it all, there would be work involved in recording audio at a Gathering unless the person has a set up to be able to record & burn on-site and doesn't bother to filter out all the bumbs & inconstistancies. Plus covers & lables have to be designed & printed....have you ever tried to line up the pre-stamped CD lables? It's a pain in the butt! At least there are folks who put Rainbow music on-line to share for free...BIG HUGZ to folks who work their butts off to share Rainbow art, music, etc for FREE! (ha ha, the opposite side of the coin poorphucker!)
I'd like to give the world permission right here and right now... if they see me having sex at a rainbow gathering... say, on the trail, or by the local swimming hole, or if you can find my tent... you are more than welcome to video tape it and do whatever you want with it... as long as you show it for free at the gathering (maybe one of the parking areas would be a good place to set up a projector and do some rainbow porn flicks) and as long as you give me a link of it... then it's ok... also... any rainbow sisters out there who want to dress me up in their underwear and take scandalous photos of me to put up on the internet... I'm totally down! love you p.s. sorry, I couldn't help myself... please return to your regularly scheduled programming....
Rainbow Girls Gone wild isn't that far fetched. The Gone Wild crew set up at Black Rock City and made a Burning Man GGW, which the corporation that maintains the name promptly sued over... and won. No one could sue on behalf of Rainbow. this is good and bad, as you'll see as you think about it.
I don't think there'd be grounds for a suit. The plaintiff would have to convince a judge that someone walking naked down a crowded trail or dancing naked by the Boogie Pit in front of hundreds of people had a "reasonable expectation of privacy". I had to study up on this a bit during my brief career chasing cops around the woods with a video camera.
The idea of profiting off the Rainbow Gathering and throwing all the money into the Magic Hat is a lovely one, IMO. Without disrespecting or encroaching on anyone's privacy of course.
