Is it alright to wear ponytails in new dreads? I was wearing them, and still am(not everyday), but some people told me that ponytails (not matter how tight/loose) would strangle my dreads, whatever that means. I think they meant that ponytails will wreck them, and they won't grown nice/will fall apart/break. To re-cap, mine are two weeks, and this was the day after getting them I had to wear a pony.

I think that if they are always up, they may not dread as quickly because they are not free to move about. That may be the only drawback.

thats what i was thinking.. i put mine up if i need to and they're dreadin' just fine. i could see how it would jack them if they were always up in the same hairstyle day after day.

Gotta have the ponytail if I'm dunking a poopy cloth diaper in the toilet, or if I am cleaning the toilet, or changing a dipe, and sometimes when having sex. I think just like everything else, all things in moderation.

That's what I figured - no real harm at all. I have to wear my hair up when I'm at the barn, or in labs at school. I don't wear pony's all the time because I fear the monodread, but I didn't think it was a big deal to wear it up sometimes. I have noticed any bad effects either.

    Sanks guys!

I used to wear my hair up in a pony all the time when I had dreads. I think that's what made things turn for the worse. Won't make that mistake again.

Just definitely don't use elastics pony-tail holders!!! I have a mark on a lot of my dreads where the elastic was held....they become very very weak and cause a lot of breakage and I rarely ever used them! (Only like Mojo when washing dipes in the potty....learned the hard way and had some totally nasty dunkage )...anyways, use a cloth of some sort to tie them back and all should be good :)

i use the wrapped elastics... so that it doesn't get STUCK like if i used a rubber band. but i tie mine up while i'm at work... i kinda have to, lol... as i deal with poop and food and all kinds of stuff, haha!

i've been doing it since day one, and haven't had any trouble.

i used to tie mine back, but i used a really stretchy headband instead of hair elastics, it much much better, didnt do it so tight as to 'strangle' le dreadies =]
