Well....the supreme court sided with election officials in Ohio recently, rejecting the GOPs attempts....but....
they also are backing voter ID laws, like in Indiana (http://www.cnn.com/2008/POLITICS/04/28/scotus.voter.id/index.html)

I recently talked to a friend who was volunteering in Indiana, and he mentioned a elderly black man who couldn't get his voter registration because he never had a birth certificate. He had documentation that had worked in the past for other things (I think even a drivers license), but the voter id card was harder to obtain and he no longer had a drivers license.

I was harassed by a Republican volunteer monitor at my polling place because I didn't have a change of address sticker on my license. Apparently an ID may be required in Connecticut (although it's not as strict as Indiana and others), and Republican volunteers were dispatched to try to keep out voters. Apparently it's legal for the parties to have someone oversee a polling place.

It's just another sad, sad lie. All studies show that there is virtually no voter fraud. (I've never heard of any cases, except maybe that Mark Jacoby guy recently...but he was working for the Republicans.) The sad part is that the Republican strategists know exactly what they are doing. They are trying to prevent people from voting. And they lie to their supporters so that they believe they are stopping the evil voter fraud. It's another example of how the Republican party really stands for nothing, because what it stands for is a lie with a completely different motivation than what they say.

Anyway....I was allowed to vote. Luckily for me, that kind of experience just makes me more likely to vote again. For others, it might have the opposite effect.

I remember hearing of tactics in 2004 where fliers were put on cars and in mail boxes in poor neighborhoods with bogus poll location changes and bogus warnings that you would be in trouble if you vote and hadn't paid all your taxes. Lovely stuff.....it must have made the people behind it so proud when they won.

Said it before and I'll say it again. Voting irregularities will occur with a population of 400 million.

Democrats: Guilty. Blamed for franching voters.
Republicans: Guilty. Blamed for disenfranchising voters.

We call ourselves a democracy. You decide ...
