so last night, i'm watching msnbc and this commercial comes up for a special thats gonna be on in 2 weeks about the jonestown massacre. so i'm looking up some info on the net, and i come across this link for the infamous death tape (all 45 minutes of it). Without thinking twice, i listened to the entire thing. my first impression was that it was one of the most emotionally powerful pieces of audio i had ever heard and was instantly intrigued. as it got further and further to the climax (drinking the kool-aid) i started to feel that i might not be able to handle it. by the end of the tape i had felt like i had a visit to a holocaust museum on acid. Vicious nightmares ensued and i woke up countless times. I maybe only got 2 hours of sleep. I feel traumatized by hearing this tape. Has anyone else heard this tape before, or is interested in the jonestown massacre? It would be nice to share some feelings on this as i cannot stop thinking about it.
thats why i dont watch horror movies. reality has far more horror to it than a screen play.. i remember when it took place, the documentary should be intriguing..
yeah i know i have heard a lot of it over he years.. jim jones was a very charismatic speaker.. right up there with obama..
lol they are both alleged socialists but only one really was a socialist. the worst bit in the tape has got to be when jim jones talks about the children going and hearing the children crying after being fed the poison.. extremely powerful stuff. combine the audio with photos of the aftermath and you got yourself a bonafide nightmare sequence. I just hope i don't keep having these nightmares after last night, because i have a habit of repeated nightmares.
I dont know anything about it and Im pretty sure I dont want to listen to the tape. Can anyone tell me more about this jonestown masacre? I could go look it up, but it's more fun to ask
the biggest doomsday cult in history. extremely fascinating. especially if you get into the CIA conspiracy stuff. just a warning though, researching it is like researching the holocaust only scarier because it happened in our society, there are possible modern politics involved and it happened only 30 years ago.
a church/cult out of indiana went to guyana and formed a commune, government wanted to take all the kids and bring them back to the united sates. there was a shooting when a delegation arrived to investigate from the united states, soon after the leader(jim jones) made up a big batch of poison kool aid and had the entire cult drink it.. almost all of them died...one woman killed her children with a knife and then herself as the police arrived.. gruesome stuff..
900 people met their demise under the shadow of a socialist megalomaniac. their death was almost like nothing to them which is evident in the tape. One interesting thing is hearing some of the people speak out against what is about to happen to them to which their leader ultimately convinces them. Their human instincts kick in only to quickly be drowned by a voice of assurance and they all end their life. all 900 of them. There is a silence at the end of the tape accompanied only by the sound of surreal religious music playing. I honestly cannot think of a more chilling example of horrific audio in the history of recording, It has to be heard to be believed. i would advise against hearing it though. If i could go back and not listen to it i probably would.
dude you got sucked in way to deep.. sadly your reaction is demonstrating how easy it was for them to have gotten sucked into there demise. shit like this happens all the time, perhaps not on such a massive scale but it does none the less..
i could never listen to it. just being reminded that it HAPPENED is enough to give me a sick feeling. all those babies. it's enough to make me glad i actually do believe in heaven.
They were promised an afterlife and brain washed into thinking the end of society had come. To them, they were simply passing on their spirits to the heavens under the command of God. Religion can go wrong in so many ways. There are false prophets out there just waiting to sweep up more people into their belief system. The spread of evangelism is the greatest example of religious growth gone wrong in our country simply for the fact that they combine church and state. Politics and religion are a recipe for disaster, as evident with jonestown and other religious cults. People like Jim Jones want it that way, because they are the leader, and the only one who knows the truth behind their motives. HHB, are you suggesting that i am as weak-minded as someone who would join a suicidal religious cult? Research can sometimes lead to over-analyzing the subject which i will admit to doing.. but how could most people not be as freaked out as i am after listening to that tape for the first time. It's the same feeling one gets when they are in 9th grade in high school after watching holocaust videos in history class. You are in initial shock from witnessing such tragedy in mankind's recent history. And yes, i had nightmares from that too lol I don't think that makes me as weak-minded as someone who is susceptible to being brain washed so please don't suggest that.
i don't think he's calling you weak minded, rather referring to the human condition that allows most of us to be heavily effected by one thing or another depending upon our personal filters and weaknesses. i could be wrong, but that's what i thought he meant.
Religion can go wrong. But then again, so could everything else. It just happens to go wrong on a bigger scale..
it's that herd mentality, combined with permission and an authoritative and charismatic demagogue. and a belief that you'll get away with it.
The human psyche and the way it works is the single scariest thing in existence. The ability for the masses to be led into the ways of thought that the mind of a higher image such as a leader figure possesses is so crazy.. and it must be accepted as a part of human existence as well as a warning to the end of human existence. In almost all religious prophecy, the end of the world will be initiated by one man. History confirms the possibility, and events such as the holocaust and cult-led mass suicides are prime examples. Just look at the photo taken of jim jone's death chair and a sign above it stating "Those who do not remember the past are condemned to repeat it" with all the bodies lying around it, it is a haunting image. Yet, even with the spread of anti-cult movements after jonestown, doomsday cults still exist as do mass suicides and cults such as the children of god who are focused around their belief of free love between an adult and an adolescent and many other fucked up things that religions can give people delusions of their rights to do so. I don't remember learning about jonestown in high school, or any cult stuff for that matter which i think should be a priority in our public school curriculum.
Oh, and by the way the 30th anniversary is coming up so you'll probably be hearing some stuff about it which is one of the reasons i brought it up in the first place.
We learn about the holocaust, while skinhead neo-nazi kids take what they want from that. The difference here, is that race is not involved. It affects everyone the same.
