"Soul" is all in the ear of the listener.

Soul is in the ones playing the music, which is felt by the listener. To each his own is what i say. I just feel that music esp rock has lost its soul.

Well really its a combo of things

most people dont have a soul anymore
so how would they make something like art
second the corporations took over music completely
and they have less then no soul

Music hasn't lost its soul somewhere down the road....there have always been, and will always be, people who play music because they simply LOVE to play music.

The '60s and '70s rocked for sure, but it's silly to think that good music stopped being made on December 31, 1979. The music industry has always been about money and greed, and if you're simply blinking at the mainstream and then walking away, you're missing out the other 99% of the iceburg.

Judging all modern music by the mainstream is like judging an entire family because one of one drunken uncle.....The family can't help being related to the old bloke, just like good modern music can't help being related to shit modern music. (It's a bad analogy but it's all I've got)

I disagree about there being no good (new) music out there. I constantly hear new artists that fascinate me. It's really a matter of personal preference though. What I might enjoy might not be what you'd enjoy.

I also disagree that corporations completely overtook music. That's a ridiculously sweeping statement. In fact, I think the majority of new stuff I hear is independent.

Anything I like. Most of the stuff I like is recorded before 1975 and resides in the classic rock category. But my record collection contains everything from death metal to folky singer/songwriter stuff. Name dropping is useless really. I can't stand much of the stuff recorded in the 80's though, but that's because I don't really approve of the production values of that decade.

to be fair tangerine mountain; although the bands you've listed are classics; they are still well known and widely publicised. try digging deeper; into the underground scene of past and present. there's much much better music about. you should sample different genres too. you could be surprised.
but yeh, to hell with 'my comical foamhands'.

I understand completely how you feel: about what happened to music and the wish other people would dig good music too. I no longer waste my time with those thoughts though, since I guess there's no point asking why people wanna listen to bands like My chemical romance and Radiohead, instead of trying to find something really good.. or do they really love that stuff so hard? You know.
It doesn't matter, I guess the 'underground' music scene has it's charm really and at least I know there's great music being made :)
It would be great indeed that those groovy bands wouldn't be in the underground and that groove and music with soul was in the mainstream more again, but it's like you say yourself, we better be openminded ourselves and let the other people be. Just enjoy the good stuff, there's more than enough! :cheers2:

MCR is absolutely NOT the best band in the world....they're 70% good for the times we're living in but that's about it...and music IS subjective I guess!

I feel you, there are still a lot of really good bands out there
A lot of them are underdeveloped/underhyped because of the media and mainstream powerchord mania bullshit

I really think that people that don't like led zeppelin and pink floyd and all that just haven't really spent the time to listen to them
But then again I like only a handful of songs by them, you have to say the zepp style (songs like moby dick and black dog) get a little annoying

I think bands like acdc are just repetative and I get why people say they don't like that stuff, most people in adolescence are egoheads anyways and listen to music that portrays the image they want people to see them as

red hot chili peppers is my favorite band, their stuff is really good and from the soul
I can connect to the lyrics really well and I read Scar Tissue the book and love to think about how they came about to make music

Plus they have their own distinct style unlike many other bands out there
its like a funk/rock with really soft yet thick vocals
    songs;
    otherside
    under the bridge
    scar tissue
    snow hey oh
    slow cheetah
    fortune faded
    by the way
    tell me baby
    californication
    dani california
    zephyr song
    soul to squeeze
    cant stop
    my friends

i like some "real" music, as you put it, but i'll be honest, pink floyd(particularly) DOES bore me. I have sheet music for a few of their songs, and it's well written, beautifully composed stuff, but it just gets boring.

Now while MCR isn't exactly mind blowing, i'd be willing to say they probably keeps the attention (especially of our A.D.D. generation) a little better than some of this stuff.

Technology isn't evil, and it really can enable musicians to grow.

People have been asking "What has happened to good music?" since man learned how to compose and sing music that could be repeatedly performed. Music is in a constant state of flux and change, and you can be sure, that at any given point in time, someone, somewhere on earth, is decrying what has become of "modern music."

The truth is, music today, is about as good as it ever was. Ok, admittedly, the pop music we're hearing now (The Killers/Nickleback/etc) sucks a fat one in comparison to what was popular in the past, but that's not a true reflection of the quality of music overall, and therefore isnt a very good example to illustrate the argument that music has gone downhill since the past.

For good music, you've got to search for it. There are heaps of great bands worth discovering today: LSD & The Search For God, By The End Of Tonight, Wolf Parade, Les Savy Fav, Boredoms, Deerhoof, Wolf Eyes, Black Dice, Shonen Knife, Sunset Rubdown etc. etc. etc.

there are so many types of music out there..

people need to have an open mind about music.. because there is so much music out that most people cant even comprehend.. and therefore, they dont enjoy it.. people are really narrow minded and picky when it comes to music.

music is more then just sound.. its expression of emotion through sound. and if you are human, emotion ihas effect on just about everything in the world. there are so many musicians that people would like, if they would just break free from the norm they would find it.

what happened to the music? you lost track!

YOU are absolutely right...and from experience, I can say that technology DOES not mean good music always!!
