Hello all im new here i got my dreads done about a week and a half ago using back combing and crocheting. No wax or any of that shite tho. I just wanted some advice on how to care for them I have some Dr bronners liquid soap. Just wondered if anyone has any advice on how to help them lock the natural way and how to help the roots lock. Does anyone make their own products out of scrummy natural stuff? Just wanted some general tips please. I am sooo pleased with my new dreads they are fab oh also I have an itchy scalp I have washed them once since getting them but the itch is driving me mad any advice on that? lots of love and thanks in advance Hannah xxxxxx
Wash again and scrub your scalp real good uno kinda put your fingers on your scalp and just scrub it i had the same thing it was itching real bad but i just scrubed real good and it was gone
Thanks for thatI will give it a go! I dont think i really washed it properly the first time cos it was my first time washing them I was a bit carefulI will defo get stuck in next time and give my head a good scrub xxxx
These are my main DIY dread/scalp treatments: Rosemary and Chamomile tea: boil up a handful of herbs (or a couple of tea bags of each) in a small pot, untill tea is dark brown-cool it down a bit and add enough apple cider vinegar to soak your dreads with. You don't have to rinse, the vinegar smell will go away as your dreads dry out, but if it really bugs you, rinsing it out won't hurt. The rosemary is great for your scalp and dreads, it encourages hair growth and prevents dry scalp/dandruff/itchies. The chamomile will soothe any irritated areas on your scalp. The vinegar will help balance the ph of your dreads and get rid of any residue and is great for your scalp. Aloe vera juice-just slather it on and work it into your scalp.
I disagree with rubbing with your fingers. Only rub with your fingers if you are 100% sure you aren't rubbing through a dread especially at first. Otherwise use your palm. I usually put in tea tree oil into my dr bonners mix although some already come with it. I usually also salt spray my hair a couple of hours before a shower to help the dreads stick together better.
See the "aloe plant" thread for lots of info http://www.hipforums.com/newforums/showthread.php?t=332011&f=209
if your head is super itchy, you might not be washing them enough. Wash every 3-4 days...it doesnt hinder the process...if anything it'll help, clean dreads knot up faster. And yeah...use your palm and just rub your scalp in a clockwise or counter clockwise motion all around your head. This will help clean em, knot em, and will relieve the itching! make sure you air dry them thoroughly before putting a hat or anything on! Good luck!
dreads take time and patience to form properly. nothing really speeds the process, except not conditioning, brushing, etc. I use sea salt mixed with water to spray it down with and it seems to help some. Roots and tips are the last to dread, apparently.
Sea salt will encourage knotting but may dry out your scalp, and if you already have the itchies, you want to avoid that.
Thanks for this guys, some really great advice here. im off to buy my tea viniger and aloe tomo Also I didn't realise you have to dilute dr bronners (sorry im new to this) I just squirted some in my handand kinda threw it on. How do I dilute it and wash my dreads with it? Thanks xxxx
id also advise to not crochet anymore it can be very dammaging but the roots will take care iof themnselves no reason to have to do anything to em just lkeep your hair clean..seperate dreads often so they dont grow together and love em, the lress u do the better they turn out and the longer they last
I just wanted to thank everyone again Last night I sprayed my dreads with salt water, then washed dreads and scalp with rosemary tea, chamomile tea and cider vinger, and then I washed with dr bonners. And today the itchies have goneI am a very happy bunnyThanks guys xxxxxxx
