What makes you a Vegan... I guess I mean What made you decide you wanted to be one? I got a Vegi point of view but I can't see what's the damage to a cow if you drink it's milk... I'm not trying to be an arsehole, I'm just trying to understand

browse this forum for a bit and you'll read plenty of reasons why.

    http://www.notmilk.com/ here's a bit about dairy

and as for eggs... well... it's a chicken's period. nuff said!
altho of course there is more to it than that.

I'm an aspiring vegan; it just seems a natural progression of the logic.

I don't eat meat because of....

    The cruelty involved
Yet the eggs and dairy industry is just a cruel. Those male chicks and worn out cows don't die of natural causes and get a nice send off. Plus dairy = veal

    Health reasons
Eggs and dairy are packed with dodgy chemicals and cholestorol (sp).
Animal products also account for almost all health scares and food poisoning.
Eggs also purtrify (rot) in our guts, and that can't be good.

    Just not natural
Milk in food for baby cows, they gain weight rapidly and have four stomachs. The protein in dairy is the hardest thing to digest* which could explain why so many people are allergic to it.
It isn't natural or necessary for fully weaned creatures drink the milk of another species.
What kind of bizzare conditioning occured to make us desire consuming a chicken's period?

*Paraphrasing my mother's nutritionist [of sorts]. She and my brother have mild dairy intollerances, main symptoms of which are excema and constipation respectivley.

I'm fruitarian, which technically is vegan. I've been vegan since I was 14 and became fruitarian a few months ago. For me it was because of health and my involvement in animal rights, human rights, and environmental activism.

Because dairy cows are pumped full of hormones to make them produce as much milk as possiable, are hooked up to painful machines and are slaughtered as soon as they start producing less milk. They live short painful lives. Also, they must be kept lactating so there are many uneeded pregnancys and instead of raising more cattle than we need, the farmers start rasing veal. So there is a little tortured veal calf in every dairy product you consume. Not to mention - MILK IS UNHEALTHY!!! Its really sad how the government has brainwashed people to believe that animal foods are healthy because they really arnt.

i just thought about it for a really long time and it made sense. milk is gross because it's full of cow puss, it came from a cow's tit, it's unhealthy, the milk industry LIES about it and tells everyone it's healthy (which drives me insane) and the cows have to be kept pregnant to make milk which is just mean! eggs are gross because they are a chickens period, chicks get debeaked which probably hurts more than a little, they're also unhealthy, and they make me want to puke when i see them raw. I never wore leather or fur anyway because thats just horrible, and I don't like honey so those were never an issue.

I became vegan when I found out that not eating meat simply isn't enough if you really care about animals. Animals are so incredibly abused, that dying is probably the best thing that can happen to them. Veganism is just a very logical way to distance yourself from the industries that regard animals as nothing more than products.
I dedicated some pages on my website to animal cruelty.

    everybody already said everything :)
i believe in god n'stuff and my friend, who believes in kind of ... also ... god n'stuff :D like, Vedas and stuff - he keeps telling me about the positive energy within milk and like that it comes with love (we don't actually have those factory like 24/7 milking things here yet) and he also tells that it's in the Vedas, which are really wise and respectable, that milk is like the perfect food and is the most holly meal out there, it's soothing and stuff, so I'm a bit confused, because I've been vegan for a while and this has given me some reason to think... but I think I will remain vegan :) Well, milk is for babies, I had mine when I was a baby :)

Well... but I'm a bit confused about this - if I had a chance to drink cows milk that I myself had milked, let's suppose I live on a farm and have a cow that I treat good, I'm confused - should I drink the milk or not :-/ Well, it isn't quite natural, but if milk has it's benefits and the cow isn't harmed in any way. I dunno :-/ Kinda the same with honey. Confused.

If there is a choice, I personally wouldn't consume the milk. Dairy contains a lot of saturated fat and cholesterol and no fiber or complex carbohydrates. It is formulated for the body of a calf that has to grow into a large cow within a few months. I give my kids calcium enriched orange juice and other calcium-rich foods and am convinced that they are nutritionally better of without dairy. Even though I would be vegan regardless of whether it is healthier or not, I would never ever feed my children a diet that I thought would put them at a disadvantage healthwise.

The PCRM (Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine) has a good article on the health risks associated with dairy.

Where honey is concerned, you can check out the article Why Honey is Not Vegan by Vegetus.org. It will give you a good detailed explanation of bees, honey and honey production. I personally don't need any other explanation than just my own feelings about unnecessarily taking something from an animal. It just doesn't feel right to me. I think animals are just fascinating creatures and I prefer to observe them rather than to find ways to profit from them. On my own website I dedicated a page to bees. They really are interesting animals!

Another thing about dairy cows that I don't think was mentioned, but I may have over looked it...once they outlive their "usefullness" as dairy cattle, they get turned into hamburger.

I'm a vegan for several reasons, but the main one is:

I have a conscience. I can't sleep at night knowing that if I ate any type of animal product or bought one, that I was contributing to the mass slaughter of innocent creatures, worldwide pollution, deforestation, food deprivation, etc... etc...

plus id like to live a healthy and long life.

Armed with my copy of Go vegan, you lot and the buns for moral suppourt and guidance. I shall go vegan (more than halfway there).

In addition to all the previously mentioned reasons...
I recently read in a magazine about a woman who managed to cure herself of hayfever by cutting out dairy. I suffer hayfever myself and thought hey anything got to be better than drugging myself up*

Mentioned this to my mother and she was really suppourtive (suprised me in a good way) she and my brother are off dairy too. So we stocked up on soya stuff and it's all good.

Didn't mention about eggs, just going to phase them out without anyone noticing. Seems simple enough, dairy is going to be harder.

Hanging around here and listening to your compelling arguments has scared the hell out of me, to the point of action. For which you have my eternal thanks :)

*homeopathics don't work, prescription stuff involves scary chemicals and/or rabbit maiming. Ooh so many options.
