Just seeking your views on smoking & how old is old enough & what is too young, My wife & myself im an ex smokre & she is a social smoker have a 14 year old daughter she has a reasonably large group of friends & they are at that age were some have taken up smoking some with thier parents knowledge I think alot of it is just peer pressure. We think our daughter may have started though we havent said anything my wife wants to talk to her about it and if she has started then she would rather she did it in front of us than behind our back we are talking about 13-15 yr old girls.
Do you think this is too young my wife started smoking openly in front of here parents at 13 after being caught smoking at school she said that is what they preferred rather than behind thier backs.
I would be interested in the views & opinions of those of you who have been in a similar situation & how you dealt with it.

I'd deffinately prefer my son not to go behind my back about it. I started smoking at 15 and my parents were such dicks about it. We've never been close but that was just one more thing that pushed me away. Now I live in a different City and only hear from them occasionally. They haven't even met my son.

I think a lot of people might judge you for 'letting' your daughter smoke if you decide you'd rather she smoke with you, but you have to decide what you think is right, and, fact is, she'll smoke whether you 'let' her or not. At least she wont feel like she has to hide from you.

if she wants to, she'll probably smoke whether you let her or not, if she has the money/means to get the cigarettes, but at least she won't be smoking as much... if you guys let her smoke, she has no reason to never not smoke. i don't know, i have cousins whose mom bought them cigarettes at 14 and they still smoke.. and it is not a healthy thing to allow them to do... i imagine they'll probably regret starting when they get older right? why not talk to her about how bad it is and how difficult it is to quit instead of telling her to do it in front of you?

my fiance just told me that all the heaviest smokers he knows are ones whose parents let them smoke with/in front of them.

i wouldn't buy my kids tobacco and i would highly recommend against smoking tobacco but if they can get a hold of it and i can't catch them or stop them, then i guess its up to them

i just don't understand what it helps to insist your kids do it in front of you? it's not like alcohol or drugs where their judgment is impaired, and they should be monitored. (no, i'm not advocating letting your kids drink and experiment with drugs at 13 and 14)

Please discourage them from smoking tobacco!

I started smoking at 11 and was smoking a pack a day of unfiltered Camels by 13. At almost 74 I’ve been clean since last November ….. umpteenth time I’ve quit … and don’t know if it will be successful this time.

My home office is on the second floor, the kitchen is on the first floor. It’s a bitch to have to stop half way up the stairs to catch my breath.

Kids smoke the same reasons adults do, it helps relieves stress and anxiety..

In this distorted and confused world, its not uncommon that kids smoke at a young age.. but you should approach your children about it! The Best thing ANY parent could do for their children is MAINTAIN healthy communication with them, while also understanding & realizing the pressures they receive from society..

Tell them the risks of smoking, and also mention that it can ruin development of some of your body, and that there are no advantages to smoking, just health risks.. In, the end its up to them, but you can help.

I started smoking 'tobacco' when i was 16, and i quit when i was 22... however, i still smoke weed..
Smoking is a part of growing up now'days, every kid soon or later will get pressured into trying a 'smoke', one way or another..

And, its up to you as a parent to tell them the risks, while respecting the decision they make, because you cant control them forever! and while you can, its a good idea to inform them of what smoking can do and what it can lead too.. disease, drugs, ect..

Keep in mind, there are ALOT of worse things that children are pressured into then tobacco.. regardless of what you believe, there are drugs in school, and barely-imaginable pressures..
