Winter's coming and the regular heating system in my apartment is failing. It seems extra cold in my place this year and I wanna boost my heating options with one or two gas fires.

Thing is, I've heard carbon monoxide poisoning is a risk with gas fires. I don't know much about gas, but are all fires fueled by carbon monoxide?

Are there any safe gas fires to buy out there?

I want a warm apartment, but not if it's gonna "silently" kill me.

Carbon monoxide is not the fuel but a by-product. As long as you get it installed and certified by a qualified professional who will make sure there is adequate ventilation, it shouldn't be a problem...

I'm sitting next to the gas fire in the house I've lived in since April 2006. My housemate has lived here over 20 years, and he says it's never been checked in that time, and it was already quite old when he moved in. In recent days we've felt more sleepy than usual in the evenings, except when we go to another room.
We've stopped using the gas fire and switched to using an electric heater.

You can get monoxide detectors really cheap...either electronic or just little bits of card that change colour if the air is unsafe
Should be fine though, long as you get it checked (I think its anually?) and its been installed professionally and all that junk
Just woken so yep, best Ive got

yes, even if you have a gas boiler, there is a risk of Carbon Monoxide poisoning. Get yourself a detector! They are relatively cheap, and can save your life!

When I was young, we had a gas heater in an apartment we lived in, and I would go up to my room to do my homework and always fall asleep. Couldn't stay awake. My mom just thought I was being lazy, until she had the heater checked and it was leaking loads of Carbon Monoxide, and she was told we were all lucky to be alive. Since then, if I've had any form of gas heater or boiler I swear by a Carbon Monoxide detector.

Where I live now, however everything is Electric, so well that eliminates the threat altogether.

We've had a lot of problems with ours in the front room. It's ok when it's off but when we switch it on it stinks of gas and sets the C02 alarm off.. we're getting shut of it and getting a woodburner... but that has environmental implications as well i guess. x

Forced air furnace is the biggest scam there is..
Holy shit. Needs electricity to run blower, Blows heated dusty air all over the house.
How far away do you need to be from the heat source?
I like the way ppl heat a entire house and are only in one room 90% of the time..
Safe yes. waste of energy YES YES!!
