yes, it is a good idea.

401k plans are a fraud and a giveaway to wall street. they are based on the faulty assumption that most people are able to make good choices on investments. it has not been borne out by reality.

it's an experiment that has already failed.

I'm saying the data show the 401k plan as an alternative to social security is a disaster. We can theorize ad nauseam about why, but empirically speaking, the experiment has not worked and we are on the verge of catastrophe.

I counsel you to make wise investments using roth IRA's if you are going to be making good money and if you are confident in your ability to manage your retirement.

The standard advice is to always diversify your portfolio, take on a lot of risk early on, and move to safer and safer investments as you approach retirement.

Hopefully social security will be there to catch you if you fall.

i know how i would invest my money

    oh wait, no i don't

my only retirement plan is my social security, which due to lifelong low income, is not gonna be too much

i guess it is better than nothing, which is what i'd have, left to my own devices

meanwhile, i practice my homelessness skills, and eat a diet guaranteed to end my life before it gets too late

Meanwhile, back at the water-cooler, are the REST of us who DO NOT WANT THIS.

i ran across this article/blog, and it really says it all, from the working man's side of the coin:

Give it a read, and we'll talk.

Not really clear who you are referring to when you say Messiah? But from the article you linked to I read that an independent consultant addressed a congressional panel with her proposal. As far as I know of there is no pending legislation on this proposal. And no where did I read that Obama was behind the invitation to address the subcommittee. I personally don't intend to get my shorts in a bunch over it.

After you stated in a different thread, "Fuck Obama, I hope someone shoots that nazi fuck" well...I am kinda hoping you don't reproduce until you get over the angry boy thing.

    wacky

what you might not understand is

we all will die some day

    how did you live?

i have never owned a house, a car, a new tv

i have travelled around the world, been in a band, eaten good food and drank good wine and taken good drugs

i have never worked overtime, or been in a situation where i could not say 'fuck this' and walk away

so when it is time to die i will be happy

[and will leave nothing behind for no one]

    [memory fix]

i forget things, there is one situation i could not have walked away from

[two if you count jail, but...]

i volunteered for a couple of years, some 30-40 hours a week, at a community food bank/thrift store

fed and clothed people, paid bills they could not to keep them under a roof

i could not have quit that short of my own economic apocalypse

[which came, which is why we left cali$ornia for the cheaper shores of the prairie]

oh wacky, what are you watching on that 60-inch, and is it making you feel better about your 6-inch?

Look, Bluska, YOU made your choices, KNOWING what living on the fringe would bring. WHY should ANYone else feel bad or sorry for you? You lived the American dream, just like the rest of us. If YOUR choices led to severe consequences, YOU were the one that made that choice.

i wouldn't dream of letting you go hungry, homeless, NOR unclothed,

but i'll be damned if i'm going to feel "ashamed" that i'm not doing more, just because my husband has managed to provide a couple of TVs for us, OR ANYTHING ELSE, that he worked for, for US, not for everybody in the world, and ESPECIALLY NOT for folks that could be working, doing something, to help themselves.

ps. There are some pretty good internet, ~ well i call 'em "scams," but my SO begs to differ ;) ~ schemes that DO work. We don't do much with ours, and make an additional $100/mo! ;)

OMFG Fyrenza. Are you serious? Internet scams as social security supplement? That is your economic policy prescription?

Reading my one Fyrenza post a day, I am flabbergasted.

Don't you realize you are playing a game of russian roulette? It all seems great until you hit the chamber with a bullet. Your health, or your husband's could go any minute. I for one would be ashamed if as a society we did any less then provide you with decent care and above all, dignity.

I don't care if you want to spit on me for doing it. You deserve the right to live your life with dignity.

No where does he directly quote anyone, nor does he site a single source or provide us with a bill number. When I dig further into the subject, the only references I can find to this idea are on right wing blogs. My guess is, this is hogwash.

Gee, MJ, sure hope you can work this post into your 1/day...

i ALREADY have a dread disease, pal, which you would know if you came down off your high horse and started reading my posts...

And this may come as quite the shock, but i don't need your "permission" to live my life with "dignity" ~ i do that just fine, by finding ways to supplement the income that we earn. (btw, that supplemental income? It's more than i would get if i was on SSI.)

p.s. Why don't you do us ALL a favor and DIScontinue your immature little "gotcha on ignore/but i read this one" game? It's distracting and more than a little annoying. <sigh>

hey, you earned your 'ignore' status all by yourself. You had a crazy font, and posted paranoid rant after paranoid rant. You were ruining the board for me, so rather than pick on you constantly I put you on ignore. Nobody wants to read my reactions to your posts, and they can be so insane I can't help myself.

and you sure got it right. You don't need my permission, or anyone else's to lead your life with dignity. I want that for everybody in this country. Rich, poor, white, black, brown, gay, and straight. I think that's the point of a social safety net. You don't have to beg to get by, and you keep your dignity.

    Now, I did 2 today.

What a shock! You've (once again) described yourself, to a "T" ~ rants and paranoia ~ and you're right about no one wanting to read your responses to me, since you never seem to address the issue, but instead, dance all around it, or, as you mentioned in your post, just lose it.

Just keep me on ignore ~ it's so much more fun when you prove how weak-willed you are and how completely incompetent you are to argue anything with me. (i.e. getting all the info available BEFORE opening your pie-hole ~ perhaps by clicking on my name and perusing my profile, or is that "source" just too well hidden?)
