I am a kind-hearted Free thinker and I live in Rural Virginia. Most people around here are nothin' like me. Any words of support? Anybody else live out this way ?
Well I am VERY glad that someone replied to my post I just went on my first hike today with the Natural Bridge appalachian Trail Assoc. www.nbatc.org it was nice, mellow folks, a bit older.
Hey Virginians! Next year's national Rainbow gathering needs you!! Last year it was consensed to have the gathering in the mid-atlantic bioregion and who knows if they knew what they were talking about. But I met a really great brother from Virginia in Cali this summer and he was sure there would be a spot to hold 10- 50 thousand people in western Virginia with springs, road access but not thru-access, parking for 1000s of cars and busses, at least 4,000 ft. above sea level (to minimize bugs and impact) and no highly protected environmental issues (like marshland or a protected species of mouse that only lives there). It is a tough bill to scout for a gathering, but every person is vital to the effort. Please think about travelling to Thanksgiving council so that you might put in some very needed local input into the scouting process. Perhaps you could make a trip to your local Forest service station and look at their topo maps to see if there is any National Forest land that fits the bill. Seriously. I'll make sure I post the directions here if I get wind of them. Not to come off too strong here, I'm that kind of political Rainbow tho and am too far west to do anything myself this year. Lovenyou, Becca
I think I could scout some land around here. I am real close to Jefferson National Forest which runs along the appalachian trail.(Peaks of Otter,Shenandoah Valley, all that). I will copy down those figures and see what I can come up with. (I can't travel to thanksgiving councel, but I sure can work on some of those answers for ya).
Awesome Amber! As long as you love hiking the forests scouting is so fun! I did it in Utah year before last and it was wild running into Rainbows in the woods, hiking on real land off topo maps and being "approached" by FS workers like I was a big shot. But I'm no big shot just a hippie hiker that knows 10- 50 thou hippies need to go somewhere every year. Council didn't even pick the spot we scotued that year, but we really should have had pictures available, so if you have a camera, make sure to take pictures of the pretty spots, springs, meadows, etc. Rainbow's kind of going underground because of the permit issue, I'll PM you more Becca
dont know why but this thread just moved me...just want to say i love all you rainbows that help make it real and happen and put so much effort into what outwardly dont seem like much more than a bunch or cars and people stuck in the mud but inwardly it means so very much more, you have brought so much light to peoples lives. may the creator continue to smile on you.
Hey amber! SO glad i found this thread! i'm on the borderline of franklin co. and roanoke, so i feel your pain grrl!! There is someone around here whos like you!
Heyyy! Sorry I took so long to reply, been busy trying to make sense of all the discord going on with this country. Not having alot of luck getting settled. It's good to know you. Are you also feeling like you don't live among like minded people? ps- WELCOME HOME
Would love to have it here... lot of those gun nuts that wouldn't take it too kindly around these parts. But I was set on heading out to Idaho for this summer and meeting up with some folks for the national gathering which was said to be at Mt. Shasta in California and we were planning... then I finally decided to head to Florida instead, then one of the people in our group decided to hike the appalachian trail, and the other moved and now he's in Canada.
I think the Smart Money is on West Virginia for the State which will be blessed with the '05 Gathering. The old 1980 WV site was "By the Three Forks of the Willimas River, near Webster Springs, in Monongahela National Forest. It's on the Webster Springs SW quadrangle.", acording to WelcomeHome. Some of you scouts who have not been to an Annual Gathering might want to take a look at that as an example of a Site.
yea, i know the area youre talking about it is probably one of the prettiest places in the country......
The last gathering I went to was Alleghany PA in '01 . Do you guys know what to expect these days? is it still chill and a wonder for the senses ?
