SOO, i read that some people here think the dh shampoo is ok, so i was just wondering whether its worth trying? beleive me, i hate having to resort to this, but i need to wash my hair, and right now, nothings working!

what were your desired effects? do you mean to say you haven't found any shampoo that gets your hair clean?

just use bronners, baby dreads are supposed to fall out and then reform on their own. Thats the whole point of dreadlocks.

many may disagree but....I like the dreadhead shampoo. STAY AWAY from the other products, they are a waste of money, but the shampoo gets my dreads really clean, rinses all out and they feel a bit tighter after every wash (once or twice a week)....that said, I would still try Dr. Bs or the deep cleanse first but if for some reason those don't work, I have had success with the dreadhead shampoo...the only problem is you have to use quite a bit once your dreads mature some.

The shampoos I have tried so far are:

DHHQ: This is the first shampoo I used after backcombing/perming. I thought that it cleaned my hair and dreads really well, and didn't leave a residue, or make my scalp itch. When researching what other people thought of this shampoo, I found that a majority of people didn't like it because it dried out their scalp (itchy), or gave them dander (due to drying). For me, it worked very well with my hair/skin conditions, and I will finish the bottle I have here at home. I wouldn't buy it again because of the price, and unavailability, and that there's other products available.

Ivory soap: Sounds funny, but it worked! No residue with a proper rinse, but it didn't feel like it "locked" the dreads as much. And I don't mean 'knots' as much as I mean general tightness. Again, I'd pass on this option unless you don't have much else. I haven't been able to find out much data about what people are doing with this soap. I heard 20 years ago that Ivory was one of the few residue free bar soaps out there, but haven't found much online about people using it today, so I have no info to offer in that arena.

Baking soda: I mixed a couple of tablespoons of baking soda with a squirt of the DHHQ shampoo, and this did a great job of cleaning the dreads. As far as tightening, it was ok. The sodium bicarbonate really makes your hair tacky, and it seems like it would knot up good with use. The reason most people don't like it is that it requires measuring out of multiple additives (oils, vinegar and such) to make the concoction NOT itchy or dry their scalp. For me though, my skin and hair conditions can handle it. Also people didn't like this method because the vinegar added can smell some. Most people note that this is one of the most effective means to deep cleanse their dreads.

Dr.Bornners BAR: I found that my local whole foods carries a decent selection of Dr. Bronners products, and purchased one of the Almond Hemp bars. I purchased the bar over the liquid because I read that some people prefer the ease of use of the bar. The liquid requires making a ratio of 12:1 water:soap (ie. it takes effort to mix.) So, I used the bar, and I feel like it did the least to lock my hair, but it felt like the nicest job cleaning in a residue free way- and taking care of my skin (cause there's some oils in there).

Saltwater Rinse: I have also done some some sea water rinses in the past, and for me, that's one of the best ways to go. It takes care of my scalp oil, it makes the hair tacky and want to knot, and best of all, it's ALL NATURAL. Many people say the seawater REALLY irritates their scalp (drying itching, burning). For me, I can let 'em dry and sleep on it.

So, that's my write up on shampoos for now! Remember, everyone's hair and scalp are unique, just the same way their dreads are unique. You should consider how often you need to wash based on how much oil your skin makes, and how dirty your hair gets from your environment and lifestyle. I for one have very well adjusted 'normal' scalp that allows me to use some excessively drying techniques. I also train every day, working out causes sweat and secretion from the hair follicles. So I have to wash maybe a little more often, for now. Also remember that later as your dreads mature, you wil want to 'wean' them off of washing. I have read that this is a natural process, and that as your dreads grow in the months and years- you will wash them less.

i have DreadHeadHQ shampoo right now, i added a few drops of tea tree and peppermint oil to it. tea tree is supposed to be an anti fungus thing and the peppermint relieves itching and smells great, im a fan of christmas so peppermint is one of my favorite scents.

i used Ivory soap before i had the shampoo and it left residue. maybe it was because i wasnt used to washing dreads but it definitely did leave something on my scalp.

after my DreadHead shampoo is gone im ganna pick up some Dr.Bronners. after that i plan on trying KnottyBoy shampoo. i think its best to try everything out there before i pick one to keep using.

I've had the best luck with homemade shampoo bars that I found at farmer's markets & craft fairs. I look for bars made with tea tree and hemp oils, that cater to dandruff/dry scalp. Now I'm into making my own soap and I'm currently creating a recipe for a dread shampoo bar.

I've been using Dr. B's Tea Tree, but it seems very hard to get the soap out of my dreads or off my scalp...I have to spend at least 10-15 minutes in the shower, clawing the soap out of my scalp and dreads (sigh)...think I'm going to give the old DreadheadHQ shampoo a try again. It seemed to tighten them just as well.

My hair liked the DHQ shampoo as well. I was given half a bottle and found that it worked similarly to my T-gel. But since I'm not a big fan of the fact that DHHQ promotes useless product like wax and rubber bands, I'll be giving my $$ to T-gel. Does the same thing and I can buy it at anywhere.
