To start off I am new here, first post, so hello everybody I have had my dreads for 11 days now so they are still very new and I am also very new to this so I have a few questions. I used backcombing and Knotty boy wax to make them (with a little rubber band at both ends of each one) after four days I washed them (just water) for the first time, I did that again about 3 days after that, the following day (total day 8) my buddy put in some knottyboy accelorator gel and gave them a good palm rolling, as well as redoing some of the bands. Thats where I am right now. 1) Shampoo: What can I use to wash my hair? I have read that Dr. B's leaves stuff in your hair (and with all the scents and oils I could see how) and that using a regular bar soap like Ivory is too harsh. I also really dont want to drop a bunch of cash and buy knotty boy or Dreadheadhq online. 2) Itchyness/dandruff: Since putting in the Knotty boy accelorator gel especially, though some before maybe too I have had some itchyness and now dandruff. Is there anything I can do abou that, I dont normally get these issues so I know it has to do with the dreading and not with me. 3) loose hairs: I understand that I have only had the dreads for a weekish but I have a lot of loose hair. It kind of looks like if somebody had dreads and also regualar static hair maybe. its not just a few its all over. Is there anything I can do to start working these in to the dreads well?
Shampoo: Dr Bronners diluted 12 parts water to one part Bronners or a deep cleansing baking soda concoction that someone will no doubt post here for you. (I personally use an old dreadhead bottle with one squirt of shampoo filled with water.) Itchyness. Is usually due to the dreads not being used to being washed so little or not being washed enough. Most people advise washing twice to once a week. Leave it alone it'll make it worse. You'll have it for another month or so. Loose hairs: Leave them alone too. You cannot expect to have dreads in a week. We all had/have loose hair. Go look at the pic I have on my profile holding a baby, in that photo dreads are five months and are just starting to mature at 9 months. They'll be sucked into the dread when they mature. The static your describing is NORMAL Stop using wax, products and take out the rubber bands. They'll kill your dreads Seriously. They just want to make money. Read every page of the sticky pages. Trust me. I was using the knotty accelerating gel. Didnt do a thing. You dreads will unravel but they will lock up in time. patience gets you a long way Hi and welcome
#1 stop using the wax. i used kboy, it was horrible. #2 you dont need rubber bands around the tips.. i also did this and it hindered the process and made them look dodgy #3 i also used the gel stuff, and it does say not to use it too close to the scalp and only when the hair is damp... i also had the dry flakeys and it wasnt nice, so i just stopped using it - it didnt make any difference, therefore you dont need to use it. end. #4 i used the kboy 'poo bar, i rubbed it on my scalp, lathered, rinsed, rinsed again, and again, squeezed out the excess water, then whacked them up in a towel for bou 15 mins to dry a bit more, then i let them air dry.. #5 i think (but im not certain) you can use pretty much any shampoo on yer hair as long as it doesnt have conditioners in.. if id known about it i woulda used the baking soda concoction #6 flakeys.. just wash and rinse REALLY well, and dont put the gel in again #7 loose hairs.. love 'em and leave 'em
Pretty much sum things up nicely!!! Itchiness will go away as your scalp adjusts to a new washing schedule. Things to combat itchy: Pure Aloe Gel or Tee Tree Oil to the scalp, in moderation. Poo's: Nothing beats baking soda in my books 'cause it's cheap, everywhere and really really effective! I also use T-gel and find it to be soothing for the scalp and tightens/drys the crap outta my dreads and is non-residue. ( The SLS fear started as a hoax but most poo's that have it will also have crappy conditioners in it and that's worth avoiding) You just gotta find what works for you. Everyone's hair and scalp is a little different. Learn to love your loose hair. Year and a half here and I still have a good deal of 'loose' hair.
hi hellodreadhead, i was wondering why is this so? i've almost narrowed down my shampoo choice but this is the only factor preventing me from getting dreadheadhq's stuff maybe ill have to end up trying all the different options out there
1) bronners only leaves residues in oily hair types or if your water type makes almost anty soap hard to rince (soaps and detergents react differently to difertent water types adding borax to a soap makes it rince more like adetergent) the baking soda mix when used properly should work for anyone though 2)itchiness dandruff stop using knottyboy dreadheadhq crap especialy t5he excelerators and gells if u used wax that was a huge mistake.. follow the wax removal tips in wax sticky (read every post) after u get all the gunk out and have good clean hair (even if they fall apart from the wax removal you ll be in much better shape for dreading) things that help a ton with dandruff dr bronners tea te=ree oil soap (diluted 12/1_) if the dandrufs bad, add some rosemary oil (10 drops to the undiluted bottle seems right) if lioly hair add thyme oil also, the deep cleanse (also in wax removal sticky) really helps with dandruff find mt "the solution to the dreadheadhq/knottyboy scam" thread bump it and send that letter with the excelerator wax and gel back demanding your monety back the accelreratror crap is a chemical version of just a sea salt spray..the sea saly although it does help lock ya faster can cause scalp pribvs if not rinced out ..i imagine the chemical crap they sell is far worse 3)loose hairs ignore em dont do nothing to em they will take care of themselves.. but will never be completely gone however they are far more noticible to you then to anyonbe else some people crochet them but i feel thayts a big mistake and does alotta dammage alsp i do not recommend palm rolling either..lil but might nmot hurt but alot can actualy cause yoir dreadto fall off and u dont gotta do it my recommendations. remove all bands right away remove all traces of waxes and gels..even if it meands they come apart completely dont palm rill or especialy dont re-backcomb wash with dr b or the deep cleanse weekly at least give em plenty of time to do what dreads do stop worrying as long as u avoid all those dreadheadhq knotty boy scam products and keep em cklean they wi;ll do just fine
This is because Sodium Lauryl Sulphate leaves residues in your hair. When you have undreaded hair, the residues are brushed out but as we obv don't brush the SLS residue is left in giving dreads a nasty look and wrecking them. With conditioners they're meant soften the hair making it easier to detangle after a shower. I use diluted Dr Bronners. Never had any problems with residue but I hear some people do because of hard water. If you are really struggling for a shampoo. Try the baking soda deep cleanse that everyone bangs on about. I've never tried it myself but a lot of people on here say how amazing it is. You can get the recipe on one of the sticky threads or ask Soaring Eagle or anyone else that's used it for the recipe. Hope I cleared stuff up for you
aye aye u did, cuz i was thisssss close to getting dreadhead hq but didnt want to at the same time cuz i really just dont want any chemically produced goods in my dreads im gonna go try and start a definitve guide for cleaning dreads hurhur
Well I've used Dreadhead myself and had no visible problems with it... I think at the end of the day the decision is up to you because everyone's hair and scalp is different and what works for some people won't work for another. It's trial and error really. I've not actually read the ingredients properly of Dreadhead HQ but a lot of people were saying to me "try bronners!! It's amazing" and I haven't looked back since. I wasn't thrilled on the smell of the citrus Bronners but by god the Lavender one is amazing! I'm going to try the Rose one next see if the smell of that is just as pungent as the lavender.
hello ive have my dreads for bout 3 years i started to only wash my dreads once a month because they r pretty long and the done fully dry out for a day i love in a cold country so that doesnt help. but recently ive started washing alot more because they r getting very brittle so i want them moistioned up a bit i used wax the odd time but it holds to much fluff and dirt im just wondering wot shampoos i can use that will 100% DEFFENITLEY NOT damage my dreads on the highstreet. ive tried all the knottyboy and dread hqs and dr.B;s i just want something that i can buy in the shops handy and cheap . and the second thing is if i cant wax my hair wot other things can i do to insure that the dreads wont get brittle and break any ideas?? thanks happy dreadin
100% pure aloe will work well I would imagine. Either get your own plant or find it at the health food store. Check the ingredients and only buy the kind that only contains pure aloe, nothing else. You might try just making your own baking soda concoction combined with Apple Cider Vinegar. I don't know what it will do for your dry hair, but its an alternative to buying a particular shampoo. Personally I use Bronners and love it. I would definitely not use any wax, that will only ruin your dreads. If there is any wax remaining, I would get it out ASAP.
does tee tree shampoo do the trick? and how would i get the wax out quick all i no wot to do is run ur dreads under real warm water? thanks for help
Basically do a deep clean concoction with baking soda, lemon juice, and some through an apple cider vinegar rinse in there too. Do a search for the ratios. I would use as hot as water as you can possibly stand without burning your scalp. After several washes, you should be able to get the wax out. Look at the sticky icky wax removal thread. I love the Bronners tea tree oil. It works great. Keep in mind, you don't want shampoo. You want a quality natural residue free soap. Bronners isn't totally residue free but I enjoy what it leaves, and I think it results in normal or lessened oil production, not over production caused by shampoos.
