Mold during storage.

:conehead: I recently bought a batch of off another grower.It wasn't ideal-a bit damp,but my little crop isn't up for months due to a small problem so I had to 'go with it',as it was all that was available.I stored in clean,air-tight,glass kilner jars,so as to retain the 'value' of the batch.After about 2 weeks-I (luckilly) noticed a white,cotton wool-type mold start to appear here and there.I immediately took the whole batch out-gave it a 2 and a half hour 'airing',during which I lost about 8-10% in weight,in moisture loss,and then replaced after wiping and shaking off most of what I could of the mold.I have to say it feels and looks a lot better for this!Did I do the right thing? and is their a fungicide or treatment for the mold?Does the mold have a name or it it just 'common or garden'?Any thoughts.
P.s.Please dont say dont buy 'damp' weed in the first place!!-it aint always that 'smart' round here unless your D.I.Y.

 

its a mold that commonly forms if you dont dry properly before curing.

in the last year, ive lost about 10grams to mold. currently i am trying a vodka extraction of moldy bud to avoid throwing it out.

avoid smoking it, as spores are bad and ive experienced coughing before after breathing in the smell of the bud

 

Hate to tell you to hit the weed with a hair dryer.. but thats what i would do..
If its spoiling and molding, Id crisp dry it with a electric heater with blowing air..
curing buds yuo must open and close the container. Its tricky.. But the buds shouldnt be that wet when you place them in there. Your curing to preserve taste and make spice smell.

 

ive heard its not safe to smoke the mold, but im pretty sure i had at one point or another. so if all of it molded, i would have to say go ahead an puff it. if only a little bit molded, then use that little bit for cooking, and dont risk smokin it.
anytime u get damp herb, u know it wasnt dried, so no way it was cured proper, at that point you should have finished the curing before storing.

 

Thankyou Freinds,all very useful.The hairdryer (I used a fan-heater) was particulary useful in saving the day.I'm fairly certain I've lost any profit I would have seen,in moisture loss, but at the end of the day myself and my freinds have something reasonable to smoke and that,for me,is the main thing.The mold was sparse and patchy and I have reserved all the 'infected' bits which I will dry to a crisp and consume myself,ever the martyr.I will be certain to be more vigilant in future in 'curing' the batch,if I deem neccessary before storage.Thankyou again.

ive made moldy buds into an alcoholic tincture.

great recipie that will leave you standing and recoiling in utter disbelief at its odd flavor:

0.5oz Inferno vodka (steeped with .4g of bud for a week)
1oz fireball whiskey

you will take the shot and spend close to a minute recovering from the shock it lays on your senses. awesome taste tho.

No no no ... Vodka is NOT strong enough of a solvent to efficently remove the THC from the bud. What you want to do is put ur wet bud in a paper bag for a week, shake it around, make it REALLY dry, like dust dry. Then use a coffee grinder and grind it up to a powder. Then get a cookie sheet and pour ur "dust" over the sheet and let that sit somewhere warm or whatever for a few days... Then get a Jar and some 99% Isoproply alcohol and let it sit in there for a few days... Shake it around.. Then let it settle for a day. Pour off the alcohol without getting plant matter....repeat this step by adding fresh alcohol a few times, add green liquid to a pyrex baking dish (bigger the better) then evaporate the alcohol by letting it sit or putting it somewhere warm.... it'll be potent oil instead of something dirty...

I'd take 'em back to the guy who fucked you over by selling it to you and stick them moldy budz right back up his greedy ass. Only takes 5-10 days to dry the shit out to a crisp - all the way through, even on huge colas. WTF is up with greedy cocksuckers sellin' shit early? Is that $100 really worth it?

Weed will lose about 75% of it's weight when it's dried out. 50% within the first couple days, the other over the course of the next few days. So if you bought it SLIGHTLY damp, it was probably 3 or 4 days into the hang. Do I need to tell you that you just cashed in on a bunch of water or do you get it now?

I know that not having a bud sucks, but waiting is better than pissing away your cash.

 

Most of the alcohol tinctures that I've read about are steeped for upwards of 6 months. And it only takes one kind of liquor - 100 proof or better vodka has very little flavor - probably your best bet. For best results, use a gram of bud per oz of vodka.

 

why let it sit for a few days? the oil will be nasty and harsh. i wouldent let it sit for more then 8 hours. and why dry the pot? fresh wet buds make the best oil IMO. aswell dont just pour the iso onto the pyrex, filter with coffee filters first.....damn noobs lol
