I was thinking about this a while ago and thought it was crazy. If every couple in the world was allowed to have only one child, in a few generations the population of the world would be cut in half. If couples were only allowed to have 2 kids, the population would stay the same. IMO, this would be a good idea because if the population keeps growing the way it is, we're all fucked in 20-30 years.
Don't worry the powerful thank tank "Club of rome" has plenty of plans... Amongst other lovely groups of policy makers..
you should check out the statistics of other countries. they actually have a policy like this in parts of asia and it leads to a lot of awful practices (families want to have a boy and kill or give away girls). also, the average amount of children that people in developed countries have is significantly lower than the sustaining amount, the amount required to keep a stable population (Edit: which is around 2.1-2.2). and people in developing countries are having far over the amount necessary. basically this means that poor countries are becoming overpopulated, while wealthy, well-educated people are starting to decline in population.
Actually, it takes about 2.1 kids to hold the population steady. Population growth is not an issue in most of the world anymore, it's only a few high-growth areas that have problems.
I think the overpopulation issue will be self correcting over the next decade or so. Legislating the size of families would make government the focus of general ire for its intrusion into people's personal lives but allow an infrastructure to crumble the population that relies on it for food and shelter will suffer attrition- and the mega charade that has folks supposing that the happenstance of market forces and investment bubbles precipitated the calamity that everyone is oh-so-powerless to do anything about and the blame and anger can be diffused with only some being placed on those in charge. Of course Monsanto can develop genetically modified wheat that produces a contraceptive then have a friendly attorney accept a high post "Taylor made" in the FDA long enough to railroad not only approval of the modification but legally ban the labeling of unmodified wheat as such then step down and take a VP position at Monsanto- sort of like what happened with genetically modified corn. There are many subtle ways of offing the general population while pretending to be powerless.
haha yeah you missed my edit. i think depopulation in some parts combined with overpopulation in others is the main issue.... because of the significant difference in status quo in these areas.
Babies should be sterilised at birth, but in a way so it can be reversed later on when they are an adult, but only once they pass various tests to prove they're worthy of passing on their genes.
The government has no right to tell a couple how many children they can or can't have. My opinion is, as long as you as the parent can provide for them (emotionally, physically, financially), it's a personal choice which deserves absolutely no government involvement. Sorry, this just hits a nerve with me. I have three beautiful children that I absolutely love with all of my heart, and imagining my life without them is just unbearable.
What about in-vitro and sperm banks? There are a lot of factors involved here...are we assuming that every baby born makes it to adulthood? Are we planning a mass genocide to get rid of all the old people that the new, smaller population of workers will not be able support in 30 years?
Don't forget that there are more things killing us off these days. And they predict that the life expectancy of the next generation is shorter than the life expectancy of ours or our parents...
my thought on this has been baby credits.. each woman gets 2 baby credits that she may use or sell.. when the credits are used she cant have any more kids. if she gets pregnant without any credits she should have to abort and then be sterilized.. if someone wants more than 2 kids they can purchase a credit from someone who doesnt want kids and have a larger family.. granted this is just a basic theory and it would only work where there is a system in place to regulate it but i do think its a basic start to a viable plan.. please dont ask me to elaborate because i have no other thoughts on this plan other than what ive just typed..lol
no not at all.. if you can afford to buy baby credits you can have 12 kids.. see to me this solves lots of problems.. you will no longer have people having 6 kids for more welfare for one...
