I was wondering if some people could post a list of the months where you saw major changes in your dreads from puberty to wherever you are now. How long did it take before they were decent, looking good, killer, etc. I'm only two months in, but am starting to see some positive changes finally, in that they are starting to tighten up, instead of loosening up and being all over the place. Btw, I backcombed to begin with, but have some ones that are knotting completely naturally as well. State if you would...the months you saw major changes and the method(s) you began your journey with.
its been about a month for me and my hair looks undoubtedly like locks, even though some are really curly and loopy. they tightened closer to my crown first, and quickly tightened outwards from there. the hair around my bangs and temples used to be pretty loose up until recently. i just got out of the shower (washed my hair with db's, tea tree oil, sea salt and aloe) about an hour ago and the hair has not come apart at all, although they are not the tightest ones. they get wet every morning and towel dried and so far it looks like it hasn't impeded my progress. after about the 2 weeks i had a couple of big, flat congos that eventually sorted themselves out. they either separated so much that i could easily pull them apart, or they rounded themselves out. im noticing more now that the ends of the locks are curling into themselves and making rounded ends, but that could be unique to my hair type. i find that i keep loosing the bumps in my locks and they straighten back into the mass within a week or so, even days. they're all different sizes and thicknesses. some small ones are tight, others arent, the same goes for any size. my hair has shrunken considerably. i used to be able to pull the curls beside my ear out down my chest to my nipple but now they rest farther up, almost to my shoulder. its a little different every morning.
I got my dreads sept 27. Man time flys. But umm yea when i first got them i backcombed i backcombed really loose because i like to see them tighten them selfs up without backcombing so tight. Um its really crazy most of the dreads in the back you can tell there dreading up really good like i can even split one of them apart its so knotted its really hard to. But thats only the back the front herrmm well alot of them are still kinda loose hopeflly they tighten like some are dreaded at the root an the tip but not the middle that worries me but i gotta wait an see what happens. I wash with tea tree db diluted 12-1 UMM i wear a tam all day, So that i wont mess with them cause so many lil things bother me an illl just keep messn with them so ye, Thats about it. LOOOKING FOR SOME BEADS
These are going to be mostly "pulled out my ass" dates so don't take much stock in them. My dreads are about 6months old now and were backcombed, washed infrequently with either lush karma bar, bar soap or dish soap. I have a tam but I only wear it when I don't want them to get full of motor oil and brick dust. After about 2-3 weeks most of the back combing had fell out and I was left with sort of loosely knotted bundles of mostly straight hair. A big one at the front fell out sooner than the rest and I panicked and palmrolled the fuck out of it, it's locked sooner than the rest but its done so differently in a kind of hard to explain way, its sort of soft an lumpy and I think its got a fair bit of shrinking left to do, it also curls round like a pigs tail at the end. Id say at 4-6 weeks they were still just kind of loose bundles, then around 2 months they started going loopy crazy, some of them just kicking out at random and some of them in a sort of log-periodic antenna kind of way (bit like a Christmas tree.) By this time the roots had pretty much locked tight and (as I speak all my dreads start within 1/4'' of my scalp.) After 4 months or so they really started coming together but not as I would have expected, rather than pulling themselves fat and round its been more a case of adjacent loops merging together to form a fat wide dread. This happened with the Christmas tree like ones first and is mostly on the back, if I have a feel of them you can find loops in all various stages of locking together, but sadly it doesn't seem to photograph well, I could probably draw a diagram. Now at 6 months I've got a bit of a variety. The locks at the back that went crazy and locked first are kind of pulling themselves less flat and more round, they have shrunk to about 1/2 there original length. I've got a few that have pulled all the loops together into a sort of fat band but haven't shrunk nearly as much, and I've got about 1/4 that are still somewhere between straightish hair and crazy loopness. I don't seem to have to separate them as much any more but I still have a halo of loose hair on top of my head. hope this helps
after 2 months I went to a spa, they shrank like 2 cm on one day. after crocheting the tips at 3 months they began to tighter much after a year they looked very much locked up and like grownupdreadies I think that's also when they began to grow very much
I'm at 1 month as of this past weekend, so here's my assessment... Month 1: Total chaos. Month 2: ? hahahaha
LOL...I just reached 2 months....It's definately getting better than the 1st month...good god =)...basically, why I posted to begin with...how long do you guys think it takes for you to be rather content that they've locked a decent amount? 6 or 7 months?
1 month - total mess 2-3 month - starting to tighten a little 5 months - shrinking 7 months - they tighten a lot more, and look better 10 months - almost over with shrinking
i dont know if im gifted or cocky but i can really feel the tightness in a lot of these just after the first month. each section of hair has locked to varying degrees but i am totally confident that they are held together by themselves and wont fall apart from root to tip.
So about 7 months in they tend to look nice? And maybe about a year or a little more they are pretty well matured? I'm a little over 2 months and they are dreading pretty quick. The top and front of my head is slow moving though . I've been wearing a wool hat though everyday now, which is helping them along.
