    Got this in an email..

Stores that are planning to close after christmas are still selling the cards through the holidays even though the cards will be worthless january 1. There is no law preventing them from doing this. On the contrary, it is referred to as 'Bankruptcy Planning'. Below is a partial list of stores that you need to be cautious about.

    Circuit City (filed Chapter 11)
Ann Taylor - 117 stores closing nationwide
Lane Bryant, Fashion Bug, and Catherine's to close 150 stores nationwide
Eddie Bauer to close 27 stores and more after January
    Cache will close all stores
    Talbots closing down specialty stores
    J. Jill closing all stores (owned by Talbots)
Pacific Sunwear (also owned by Talbots)
    GAP closing 85 stores
Footlocker closing 140 stores, more to close after January
    Wickes Furniture closing down
    Levitz closing down remaining stores
    Bombay closing remaining stores
Zales closing down 82 stores, and 105 after January
    Whitehall closing all stores
    Piercing Pagoda closing all stores
Disney closing 98 stores and will close more after January

the good news is that i've heard of about half of those, and of that half i actually know what about half of them sell.

so this goes to further prove my belief that you need to spend money to make money, instead of cutting your advertising budget when sales drop.

I hate advertising. Bringing down everybody's quality of life to sell more shit people don't need.

seems that most of those are mall stores. I never shop in the mall so I should be ok, I am not accepting gifts this year so I dont have to worry about getting a gift card. Seems that this wont affect me this much this time around. I feel bad for the people losing their jobs. There is definitely a lot of unemployed people right now.

oh yeah, I believe that. I just got laid off from my job as a custodian with the county I live in. This is a full benefit, $15.61 hr, chilled, 3-11:30 job..I have been there 5 years and I was still the lowest on the totem pole as far as seniority ranking and I was cut like a bad habit.

Businesses love gift cards. Something like 20 to 30% of their value on average never gets spent because people forget to use them or they lose the card.

Some dumb reporter on CNN a couple years ago was claiming that businesses were hoping that all the people would use up their gift cards after Christmas to boost the stores. The stores actually hope that people don't use the cards.

how does it bring down the quality of life? sure it's annoying, and people don't really need a lot of the shit, but on the other hand, if a business wants to survive, which is necessary for the already struggling economy, they need to get their name out there. not to mention the jobs that are created just in the advertising industry alone.
