There's dread perms, Don't know much about those. I've heard some people plait their hair and then let them dread.s Most people on here will advise you to go natural and if you're going to wait til your hair is 5-6 inches when it's 3-4 now, you should start prepping now. Going off my hair type to get it your your desired length take two months. So buy some Dr bronners shampoo and stop brushing and in two months when your hair is long enough, you'll already have dreads
I think natural is the best way to go. You could backcomb if you want but only do it ONCE. Personally, I don't think it does much. Wax creates a un-natural mess as many people here can attest too. I agree with hellodreadhead. Just stop brushing and wash with residue free soap like Dr. Bonners once in awhile and you'll get dreads with much much much much patience of course.
My hair is very short, and I started 2 weeks ago today! ^^ Right now it looks like a birds nest, but it will dread eventually.
i agree if u start going natural today by the time your ready to get dreads in a couple months you'll already be fairly well into the process so mught as well just continue hairdressers tend to just mess things up no offence to mom but ok to give a full complete answer natural start at any length let it go let it grow it will dread it will dread more as it gets longer, 4-6 inches and the priocess is mych easier then 3-4 but at 3-4 it will begin, but wont be as noticable till it grows some backcomb..do it once only..3-4 inches is fine it may fall out entirely but natural will take over from there..can hurt alot and do some dammage so go easy on it..some have ripped nearly 1/2 theyre hair out at the roots overdoing it twist n rip pretty much the same as backcombing but different methids dreadperm not worth going into only would concider it if all else fails (after a year of trying) crochetting personaly would never suggest it u can get neat looking dreads fast, however they will do mych more dammage and requires constant upkeep doing more dammage every time variations on natural add beads to sections..leave em to dread finger tewase sections (simular to twist n rip but gentlyer) it barely gets the process started then nature takes over wearring a wool hat helps and seperating into secyions semi often too if u was you id probly go with the finger tease /natural just take a section of hair twist it some (not too extremely tight though) holding the end just with fingers push some of the hair towards the roots do it a few times retwisting then pushing more down.. you dont gotta do a while lot the goal isnt to make em look like dreads right away just get the hair to begin clumping together ..throw on a wool hat and wear it alotta the time
I started dreading naturally...no backcombing, chemicals, or anything....just washed every couple of days with Dr. B's bar soap. My hair is very thin and oily so knots that would form, slipped out by the end of the day! However, my hair sectioned itself off very nicely. After about 1 month and 3 weeks of letting it knot up naturally, I backcombed all the naturally sectioned off bits of hair. Today is officially 2 months! Yipee! I washed my hair for the first time since I backcombed it all last night...and yeah....one of them slipped out....but the rest stayed in. Im just gonna let it do its thing from here on out. So anyways.......its been my personal experience that letting it go naturally for the first couple months and then backcombing the sectioned bits works great! Keep in mind that dreading your hair is a very personal and unique experience. Whatever works for me may not work for you. It all depends on hair and skin type. So you may just want to play around with it and experiment. Just whatever you do...stay away from chemicals and wax!!!!!!! With that said....good luck!
