Hi! I'm new here and am also unfamiliar with Phish. A few days ago I listened to the New Years Eve concert at Madison Square Garden in '95 and I've got to say I'm impressed...

Now, I'm a huge Dave Matthews Band fan, so if you know who they are and what they play you'll know what I'm looking for...

Anyway, could you help me out in finding some officialy released concerts where Trey uses an acoustic guitar throughout the show (if there are any)... also, if there are some with lots of jazz pointed out, you know - saxophones, trumpets, clarinets, that sort of thing...

Basically , I'm looking for a released concert that sounds very simmilar to Dave Matthews Band...

    Any ideas?

1991/07/12 entire show has horns. It's a Live Phish volume but I can't remember what number it is.

I hate to tell you this man but you really aren't going to find any Phish that sounds like DMB. The show I suggested does have horns though.

I don't hate to tell you, but you won't find Phish that sounds like Dave Matthews Band. Trey had a series of solo concerts in 99 where he played one acoustic set and one electric set...but it sounds nothing like DMB, not even the same vein. completely different style and approach to music. DMB stays in what is known as type one jams. Phish's expertise lies in Type two and three jams, much more deep dive into music.

as stated before, in 91 there was a tour where Phish played with the Giant Country Horns. there are plenty of fun jazzy tunes and moments through out.

also in 2001 Trey started a solo band called TAB (Trey Anastasio Band) it was like a 7 piece at that time i think, with horns. It grew to a 10 piece band with in the next couple of years...but anyway, they kick a lot of ass. its not jazz, its TAB. its high energy shit. until you get to later TAB, which in my opinion is one of the worst bands ever. 2001-2003 is amazing. but by 2004 trey was such a junky it could not compare.

Phish will be back in 2009 (official) and so lets see where they go now....should be a lot of fun!! always is!

I cant particularly remember what shows or when, but I know Trey rips with Phil and some friends a few times quite spectacularly.

Also, if you're a DMB fan- have you had the pleasure of enjoying the Central Park show? Particlarly the "Cortez the Killer" cover w/ Warren Haynes? If not here is the link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aCiLCo-LoUg

I'm really not a big fan of DMB at all but from what I've heard DMB doesn't really jam at all. It's more like improvising solos I guess? But I guess that's what type one jamming is.

Just out of curiousity could you explain what classifies something as type two or three jamming? I've heard those terms thrown around but I've never really known what they mean. :)

Of course I have... I know anything and everything about any released album or concert by the dmb....

Anyway... I don't know, I mean, I've heard some Phish material and there isn't a doubt that they're much more opened concerning iprovisation (and I know I'll be lynched by Phish fans here) but they just don't do it for me, I don't know why is it, 'cause the music's great, I think it's 'cause of Trey, his voice sounds repulsive to me...

Bet hey, y'all probably think that DMB is a silly little wannabe Phish band, let's not argue with tastes

^^then don't leave poop bombs like that.
I thing the forumers will agree I rarely defend Phish, but if I had some ring of hell and my choice was DMB or Phish, bring it on a Trey.

But hey, YOU opened the worm can.

Yeah, I really do love Trey's voice. I don't think he has a good singing voice really though. However, I think his voice is really unique and I like it a lot! :D

if you've seen trey play you know his guitar makes up for anything vocal. while hes not the best he does have a unique voice.
cant wait to hear it again in 09!

Trey has some songs that are perfect for his range and any other voice would be lame. sometimes trey tries to sing out of his range and its painful. But you try and have another voice over a song like "reba" and it just would not fit. And in reality it can be a very unique and beautiful voice, i reference the song "Sleep". He has his moments, he is no Frank Sinatra, but Frank Sinatra is no Trey, if you know where i'm coming from.

oh and "type" jams...people argue over this...but this is my and my friends definition...

Type 1: is not really jamming really, its more of solo trading and "riffing" off the song structure (generally this is a song like "Character Zero")

Type 2: Is when the song is abandoned completely and they have created a new song or have reached near madness. (examples are a lot of the 94 tweezers, the 03 Mr. Completely, Went Bathtub Gin)

Type 3: Is a complete abandonment of music. Its more of just noise and tone loops. It can be chaotic and sometimes inaudible. But it can be awesome!! (especially if you're on L or E)

like i said, other people have their own definitions or better explained definitions...

and this guy is right.. you won't find anything by Phish that sounds remotely close to DMB.. because DMB sucks.. while Phish kicks ass and melts your face

    ^^ Truth.

DMB Concerts are fun. If you are so drunk you dont notice the people not paying one damn lick of attention to the music. It also requires a severe tolerance of fratty fucks and brohiems. If I ever see DMB now that LeRoy died it will be in the pavilion for sure. Fuck the lawn and 90% of DMB "fans".

I have heard a limited amount of DMB , and dave mathews can jam with anyone, if he wants to, but it seems to me he doesnt really want to...
Phish on the other hand, They are all about the jam, sometimes they pull it together and its like heaven and hell opening up at the same time as you come in your pants.. sometimes they fall a little short, but at least they tried.... Thats what makes every show unique
