    Hello all!

I'm writing a paper on audience interaction with musical arists and I am interested in what your opinions are from being audience members. I'm focused on the differences between being an audience member at a rock music concert and an indie music concert. I'd be so grateful if you could post a few of your thoughts/answers to my questions:

    1. In your opinion, what is the difference between being an audience member in a rock music concert and an indie music concert (indie denoting bands that are currently unsigned or bands that used to be indie but have now signed with major labels). Please specific the bands or concerts you attended to answer this question and the details which differentiate being in a rock audience vs. an indie audience.

    2. Which do you find more physical? a rock or indie concert audience?

    3. Do you ever fear for your safety while in either a rock or indie concert setting? State which genre of music and why

    4. If you are a participant in mosh pit culture, why do you do so?

    5. If you are not a participant in mosh pit culture, why is that?

    6. Where are groupies (people who seek sexual and/or emotional intimacy with the musical artist) acceptable? Rock concerts? Indie concerts? Both? None? Explain why:

Thanks for your help! Even if you can't answer all the questions, please try answering #1! If you don't feel comfortable posting here, you can e-mail your responses to: sjchan@lycos.com.

I haven't been to a indie concert i think... Or if you think by that some new almost undiscovered bands, then here they ARE the rock bands :D Rock concerts are almost always quite intense but they are awesome... Many friendly people there. I was once afraid at one festival when the singer of Clawfinger told the crowd to split in two and me and my friend thought that they were gonna do a wall of death... Moshpits are awesome... They just get your anger out of you... And energy... And make your neck hurt :D I think that so far, i haven't seen any groupies but thats only because i haven't searched...

There's no obvious difference between signed or unsigned bands, other then perhaps the unsigned bands will play at smaller venues only? When I hear the word indie I normally think immediatly about the genre by the way, which has nothing at all to do with unsigned or signed at a record label (since very different music than indie could be unsigned as well, right). As for the difference between the shows of the genres, I don't really go to indie bands neither :p, but I catched a few shows at festivals and stuff. I think if the band does a good show and the crowd likes them, there's no large difference. Except that I personally will be at the bar or chatting cause I rarely dig the music.

    2. Which do you find more physical? a rock or indie concert audience?

Well, rock is a very broad designation of course. At a post rock concert people don't get physical at all, and even in metal it really depends on the genre. But overall it's rock.

    3. Do you ever fear for your safety while in either a rock or indie concert setting? State which genre of music and why

Nope, never. At some concerts you do have to watch out if you don't want a crowdsurfer in your neck but fear, no not really. Especially in moshpits other people watch out for your safety as well, like when you go down there will be at least more than one stranger to grab you and get you on your feet again :) (doesn't mean you can't get hurt of course!)

    4. If you are a participant in mosh pit culture, why do you do so?

Because a good moshpit is fun and if it's an energetic concert it feels good. It's not about hitting people though every now and then a person seem to feel different about that :p

    5. If you are not a participant in mosh pit culture, why is that?

Generally because I want to listen to the music, am stoned or got a bottle of beer in my hand. Sometimes I just want to stay with who I'm there or just don't feel like wasting the energy. I don't get into the pit often anymore haha.

    6. Where are groupies (people who seek sexual and/or emotional intimacy with the musical artist) acceptable? Rock concerts? Indie concerts? Both? None? Explain why:

They are very accepted at rock and metal concerts. :cheers2:
