I have to admit, I do eat meat. At times I do feel guilty. But it's SO GOOD!! sorry. I believe in a quote I once heard from a very close friend: "If slaughter houses had glass walls, everybody would be a vegetarian." I am OK with the fact of looking at a cow and then looking at a steak and realizing those are both the same animal. As long as I don't know what goes on in meat-packing plants I'm OK with eating meat. Innocence is power!

I just wish there was a more humain way to let them die in peace

May peace and love find you

You could go online and do a search for grass-fed beef near where you live. There are places which pasture-feed their cattle, let the chickens run outside, etc. Some farms even invite their customers to tour their facilities. There are ethical ways of eating meat, you just have to do your research.

I've gotta agree - finding (and being willing to pay for) free-range organic beef might help. Health food stores are a really great way to find these. Buy 2-3 different brands, and check the labels... at least in my local HFS none of their meats are from more than 75 miles away - and often there's a website & address, where you can go pick up the meat yourself. (for just a tiny bit cheaper, minus the cost of gas)

heheheh I was there at 12 and veg at 13...we will assimilate you (this is a joke, sort of).

What about eating less meat, so you really enjoy it when you have it, and get a good range of plant dishes, and the health benefits from them (I was talking with a doc last week and he used the quote that cancer is a vegetable deficiency)?
You know, ditch the burgers for real food.
Might want to look into Slow Food, as well.
Animal centric, but some great philosophy about how we get our food overall.
Also, Omnivore's Dilemma by Michael Pollan can guide you, using his journey.

what about local raisers. Death is still death, but the life beforehand was better.

Try to find a friend who hunts deer and ask for some, it's far healthier than cow and chicken, tastier too. I used to get 50 pounds every year to fill my freezer, and my belly. I make a teriyaki white wine marinade with garlic, basal, and spices and simmer it on low in a frying pan. Serve with mashed potato's, vege's and bread. My dinners were a hit.

i only ate meat before i was a vegetarian because my parents bought it and ya know everyone was always eating it. Once i started dating this guy, he was a vegetarian and i asked why. (if i didnt ask why, id still being eating meat) He then told me about the factories and how they kill them and how healthy it was to not eat meat. So i became a vegetarian on christmas eve 2005.

I was under the impression that in America you can buy meat straight from a farmer. It is against the law downunder.

Anyway I am a wholefood omni,so I include the healthy aspects of a vegetarian diet such as plenty of vegetables and pulses but avoid the unhealthy aspects such as margarine or hydrogenated vegetable oil. I always buy dried ones and soak before cooking.I eat far more brown rice that I do potatoes.

meat is merely a survival food for us. Our bodies are more adept at processing vegetables and grains than we are with meat. Plus, there is much more energy to be gained from plants because they are grown by the sun, and the amount of energy in a food decreases as it moves up the food chain, because of bodily functions/heat/etc.

I'm not a vegetarian because I love animals.. I love them, but I won't deny that they taste good or suffer less than some humans do. Then again, I would probably eat human meat just to try it, if the act were acceptable where I live and the meat was tested free of disease. I'm a vegetarian because I'm attempting to keep grease and cholesterol out of my body, and trying to waste less energy digesting meat so I can spend it on working out and having sex. haha

Eating meat just because it tastes good is like saying, "I have no willpower at all, fuck my life, I'll just conform to the norms because it's what everyone else does, and it's the only thing I know." Veggie dishes taste amazing too; if you'd take the time to cook for yourself, you'd know.

To each his own. I've made my choice.

    But because you hate plants?

Low fat diets are actually unhealthy and have been linked to depression.Trans fat that is found in margarine is however extremely unhealthy.Cholesterol is part of the bio-chemistry of the human body and sex hormones are made from cholesterol. There is no correlation between dietary cholesterol and you blood cholesterol levels.

for myself, coming back to the original question it would be great to be able to be vegetarian and may even be possible with a lot of planning. but if your planning on living off of the food you grow, and live this far north you have to realise animals are one of the best and easiest ways to preserve plant food for winter. it isn't the only solution but having meat and animal fats during a long, cold Canadian prairie winter is important. The winter here (snow on the ground and stays around) usually starts in late october and ends sometimes in arpil. Effectively 6 months were you have to rely on stored food.

I think, as mentionned, is that people should learn about portions and how much a person really needs. not wants, but needs. I myself have conciously made an effort to eat less meat and smaller portions of meat when I do partake. will I ever cut meat out entirely?... I'm not sure.

Not all dead flesh is rotting flesh. And even if something is living when you eat it, it's still gonna die once it hits your stomach. Jeez, the way some people sensationalize things...

The way I see this whole subject is, if you do not like the idea of eating meat do not eat it. But don't rip on someone because they do, it's all about personal preferences. I for one will eat about anything considered a food in some country.
