I don't need to see a scan, I was asking about a court hearing or something that I thought was supposed to happen today. Not too excited about it, just curious. I might be totally off here, but for some reason December 1st stuck in my head.

It was set for the 18th of last month, I can't find any results from it. Maybe that's telling that it doesn't amount to anything.

Yep. The birth certificate "controversy," such as it was, is dead and over.

Some of the people filing lawsuits:

    http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/politics/obama/chi-obama-birth-certificatedec04,0,664988.story

"Among those filing lawsuits is Alan Keyes, who lost to Obama in the 2004 Illinois Senate race. Keyes' suit seeks to halt certification of votes in California. Another suit by a Kentucky man seeks to have a federal judge review Obama's original birth certificate, which Hawaiian officials say is locked in a state vault.

Other suits have been filed by Andy Martin, whose case was dismissed in Hawaii, and by an Ohio man whose case also was dismissed. Five more suits, all later dismissed, were filed in Hawaii by a person who is currently suing the "Peoples Association of Human, Animals Conceived God/s and Religions, John McCain [and] USA Govt." The plaintiff previously sought to sue Wikipedia and "All News Media.""

    The Salon article:

    http://www.salon.com/news/feature/2008/12/05/birth_certificate/

    Excerpt:

"For believers, it works like this: So what if Dr. Chiyome Fukino, the director of Hawaii's Department of Health, released a statement saying she has verified that the state has the original birth certificate on record? So what if she said separately that the certification looks identical to one she was issued for her own Hawaii birth certificate? Why didn't her statement specify Obama's birthplace? So what if a Hawaii Health Department spokeswoman later clarified that Fukino meant that Obama was born in Hawaii? So what if researchers for FactCheck.org actually saw the physical copy of the certification and debunked much of the key "evidence" supposedly proving that the image posted online is a forgery? They're not really independent. They're funded by the Annenberg Public Policy Center, and Obama once (with Bill Ayers, no less) ran an entirely unrelated program that happened to be paid for with money donated by Walter Annenberg. And on and on and on."

Thank you, real large! Good link. Another excerpt:

"The more data you present a person, the more they doubt it ... Once you're committed, especially behaviorally committed or financially committed, the more impossible it becomes to change your mind."

Any inconvenient facts are irrelevant. People who believe in a conspiracy theory "develop a selective perception, their mind refuses to accept contrary evidence," Chip Berlet, a senior analyst with Political Research Associates who studies such theories, says. "As soon as you criticize a conspiracy theory, you become part of the conspiracy."

Evan Harrington, a social psychologist who is an associate professor at the Chicago School of Professional Psychology, agrees. "One of the tendencies of the conspiracy notion, the whole appeal, is that a lot of the information the believer has is secret or special," Harrington says. "The real evidence is out there, [and] you can give them all this evidence, but they'll have convenient ways to discredit [it]."

    --------
Guys, we're not trying to make you feel bad or anything. The only reason most conspiracy debunkers post in these threads is that we feel bad for you: there are other, more important things you could be spending your energy on, rather than conspiracy theories that have been thoroughly disproven. There are even real conspiracies out there! But you've been misdirected; you're looking in the wrong places.

If you can just keep an open mind and look at all the data, you'll find that there are some things you should continue to worry about, and some things that are a waste of your time.

Thanks for putting in the link and excerpts from the Salon article. My link is actually the headline, but you wouldn't know unless you scrolled over it. (I was in a hurry.)

The psychology of conspiracy theories is fascinating. It shows how a conspiracy becomes faith, wrapped up as much in the theorist's identity as, say, his religion or phobias or favorite foods. It fires up all the old, lower-brain regions, which defeat logic every time.

Some psychologists study an event called "confirmatory bias." It's where our mind tends to more easily recall events and experiences that validate what we already believe. Conversely, we tend to more easily forget or ignore events and experiences that refute those beliefs.

The source? The lower brain. Caveman regions. Believing Obama is an illegitimate president may actually say more about you than it does about Obama.

Of course it doesn't hurt to be skeptical. But if you can't let go of something despite the evidence, you're practicing absolutism, fundamentalism. You're becoming a ...

god damnit real large you stole my avatar!

It dosnt really matter if Obama is a legit american citizen or not, more currupt things have happened. People should be worried about the events that are suppose to take place according to Biden and Powell, during Obama's first few days as president.

I find it enlightening that it was Clarence Thomas that accepted the case.
