I have a pitbull/boxer mix puppy who's about 6 months and we feed her every morning. And every night at about 10pm, she pukes up all her food. And this is almost a nightly occurance. Does anyone have any ideas of why this might be? Its starting to worry me. Is this typical?
No, this is most certainly not a typical trait for any puppy. It is important to feed a puppy the same food they were eating when you acquired her and slowly transition them over to a any new food by mixing old and new for a few weeks. Also, if you could split the amount of food you are giving her in half and feed once in the morning and once at night, this might help too. Do you notice anything unusual regarding her stool? Yeah, I know it is gross, but it is important too...
This is the food she's been on the entire time, because we got her at 6 weeks and besides the transition from puppy to adult dog food, it hasn't changed. And there's nothing wrong with her stool either. She didn't do this when she was a puppy but I left for college about 3 months ago and she started doing this after I left and I'm just now returning home for the winter. My boyfriend says that his lab that his parents have did this when he was a puppy. And she didn't vomit tonight, but she did about the past 3 nights. My boyfriend thinks its from her toys, maybe the pieces she tears off that's irritating her stomach. But what worries me is that she vomits at about the same time almost every night.
This is def not normal, you need to get your dog to a vet , she could well have a blockage, from some thing she has swallowed, its very normal for a dog to puke when they have swallowed some thing that is stuck, or she could of picked up a bug from eating some thing stale or bad, either way she needs to see a vet. gl with her.
Well, its been 2 nights in a row and she's hasn't vomited. I'm just going to keep a close eye one her and if it starts back up, then I'll probably have to make an appointment.
thats good then some thing similar happened to one of my dogs once, when i took him to the vets, the vet had a good squeeze and feel of his stomach, to see if he could feel some thing stuck there, when he couldn't feel out , he put it down to him eating something bad, have a good feel and squeeze of her belly to see if you can feel out. has she had her injections and been wormed?
I believe you are getting some good advice on this one and your boyfriend may be right too which can be confirmed by looking through the contents of what she vomits if her symptoms should reappear in the future. Hopefully, she is fully recovered, since there is nothing worse than spending a bunch of money at the vet only to discover they have no idea what might be wrong.
I vaguely remember something about sympthoms at the same time every day being related to worms...but I think it was a fever in humans, not vomiting in dogs. I'm so useful
Well, we discussed the issue with some people and here is the conclusion we've come too... We were feeding her too much and since it was only once a day she was really hungry and would eat it all at once. And then it would expand in her stomach so that she wasn't able to finish digesting it. And that's why it was coming back up, although we're not quite sure why it was at the same time everyday. But we've changed her dog food. We had her on beniful (or whatever it is called) when she was a puppy and when we switched her to adult food, we switched to pedigree. We went back to the beniful, partly because it was softer and we never had issues when she was on it before. And we've also cut the amount of food she eats a day and split it so we feed her once in the morning and once at night. I'm also thinking about just giving her wet dog food at night instead. Since we've done that, she hasn't puked but she acts like she's starved all day now since she doesn't get as much in the morning. And I watched when she got fed tonight (I'm usually still asleep when my boyfriend feeds her in the morning so I don't know how she acts) and she seriously inhaled her food. So we're going to up her morning amount some. I'm sooo worried about her. I've never had issues like this with a dog.
most dog foods will have a daily amount listed on them to give ur dog, according to the dogs weight, you should weigh her, so you no she is getting the correct amount of food, then split it into 3 meals a day, morning, afternoon, evening.
Just an update on the pretty little puppy! She has only vomited once since we started splitting her meals, and that was just because she had chewed up one of her toys too much and ate the bits. Like, we could actually see pieces of toy in her vomit. But other than that, she's doing well and she's adjusted to eating twice a day now. She hasn't gained much weight yet, but I'm sure that'll come in time. Although, for Christmas, I plan on getting her stocking and filling it with treats and all new dog toys so she'll probably gain some weight then, since treats tend to be fattier than typical dog food. Also, she's digesting the new dog food better than pedigree.
Aww, I'm glad your little girl is doing better! What kind of dog is she? We just adopted an American Eskimo & are learning all sorts of things about dogs right now too. love, mom
Hi Homeschoolmama,is your new pup an Amirican Eskimo Spitz??? My pop has 2 of these, and was just curious...
Hi lilbear! Yes, that's what she is. She's the miniature size - not the standard or toy. I set up a page about here HERE if you'd like to see pics! love, mom
