Hi guys im coming to Australia on January 1st to work for 3-4 months. I am flying into Perth and would like to buy a used car in that area. Ive checked on the internet and found several that meet my needs (working) and pricerange (cheap).

Ive checked into insurance and its no problem for me to get. I have a full drivers license for cars and motorcycles from Canada.

What I dont know about is inspections, registration and that sort of thing, if anyone has any info about how I can prevent myself from buying a lemon and making sure the car is legal to drive that would be very helpful. Thanks.

Vehicle registration is on a state by state basis.I don't know what the requirements are for WA. Because Perth is such a long way from the the capital cities, it is prohibitively expensive to drive to any other cities. Also the more the remote the location, the more expensive fuel becomes. At the moment as with the rest of the world is about 1/3 less than it was just a few months ago but that could always change.

In the capital cites car hire is always cheaper. In rural areas they will charge for mileage. You don't have to hire a late model car, there are always a few rent-a-bomb places around.

South Australia does not require vehicle inspections, it simply must not be blowing smoke or have bald tyres ie common sense.

NSW requires an inspection every year but if it is currently registered when you buy it , no inspection is required only at registration renewal.

Victoria requires a roadworthy when the vehicle is changing hands if the registration is not to be cancelled.

Queensland I am not sure of but you can register for six months.

I think you do need a road worthy in WA i recommend you buy a car that has Rego you won't need a road worthy if you buy it with rego

But there is a chance that the cops give you a canary?
