Had a really stoned conversation the other night and am still thinking about it...

So what is taller an ostrich or a horse?

I know the type of horse must be taken into account but we are talking an average race horse type size here...and yes an average ostrich too....

If they are both of average height, i would think they'd both be about the same size of, Average height. Until the horse stood up properly instead of messin around on all fours, then i would say the horse was was taller, but i don't know for sure because i've never seen a horse and ostrich together.

well the thing is.. if you were to measure the horse propperly from its withers then i reckon an average sized ostrich would be taller than your average sized horse, but if you measured from the head of the horse i reckon it would be taller.

yes well thats what i think anyway.

The only figures I've been able to find are:

the minimum height of a horse = 1.47 metres, anything smaller is a pony.
the maximum height of an ostrich = 2.5 metres.

we need to find averages really. hmm:H

    According to factophile.com

Ostrich height 2.75 The largest and tallest bird.
    feedscoop.com says

15 hands is a good average horse height

    using onlineconversion.com

    15 hands = 1.524 metres

Therefore an ostrich is taller - unless, as Smartie said, you count the horse's head but lets assume it was the horse out of the Godfather :p

How big are horses heads? The ostrich is winning by a good metre over the headless horse...

But I am not sure the whole neck of the horse is included.....andI think it needs to be...that could be about a metre......

Right someone buy an average horse and someone buy an average ostrich....or maybe we could raise some horses and ostrichs between us and yake an average height each year until fully grown.....

Then we could race them.....hmmmm I wonder which is faster as well....a horse or an ostrich.....and would endurance be a factor??

I am gonna start a whole comparison system...

Ah though considering the horse is measured from its Whithers (which is where all horse measurements come from by the way so stop all this head including crap cos... cos.....i said so :p) there for an ostrich should be measured from about the same point on it which CLEARLY takes off a whole meter (that necks damn long)

there was this mad convosatioon that was on some tv show i think, it may have been jhonnathen ross.

they where talking about whitch would be more deadly an ostrich or a lion.
    interseting ey?

i mean if you pland to take on a lion would you like help from a friendly osterich? or maybe vise versa.
[this is hypethetical, i do not wish to surgest that anyone on hear is a lion/ostreich beater,....i dunt wana get into that troble again]

and im sure in years to come the hoarse will gradualy looses its height, and evolve into a dog, and the osterich will gain height and resemble some sort of dinosore. [this is my way of saying i dont think it matters]

we've strayed a bit haven't we? i'm non the wiser, All i know is that you measure a horse from a point which isn't the highest, not fair! And that a Tyrannosaurus Rex is the tallest of them all. I need the answer. what if the horse was stood on its back legs? by the way i'm about 32 cm in height, thats not including most of my body tho. I'm scared that this question might not come to a conclusion. Worried for us all!

Hey how come the horse doesn't get its head included in its height.....I would be pissed if I was only measured to my shoulders....Ok here's the laws and I asked the questions so I get to make them up so blah!!

1 - All animals to be measured to the highest point of them (but then again does that mean we would measure peacocks to the height of their feather, also then are say sharks measured to the top of the dorsal fin)

    2) there is no standing on tippy toe it is normal standing position, so no rearing up you cheating horses..

    3) We are talking average heights not like super chickens or anything

    4) - No dead species to be involved....cos now I am wondering what is taller than a tyrannosaur..I am guessing dipilodocusis and that are.

    5) - Remember don't talk about measuring club!! :)
