The owner of the company that I work for is a Mennonite and keeps asking to go to church with them. I told him that I am an atheist, but I don't think he gets it. He keeps trying to get me to admit that there is some kind of afterlife but I keep saying I don't think so, I think he is aggravated that he can't get a conversion out of me. I have never really been around Mennonites before, but there are quite a few of them in this town, anybody else have any run ins with them?

that's odd. mennonites aren't generally known for proselytizing.

wanna bet? (on the proselytizing part). i recently lived in a town overrun by mennonites.

maybe it's not so much the proselytizing, but the attitude and energy they throw that it's inconceivable that anyone would be so heathen as to not believe in god, or the afterlife, or simply the things they believe in, especially when it comes to morals.

i worked for a mennonite company, and one day when i mentioned to my boss that if the schedule changed and i would have to start working sunday mornings every once in a while, i would be extraordinarily unhappy, because i can't work sunday mornings. she said "oh, what church do you go to?" i said i don't go to any church, and she then asked why i couldn't work on sunday morning's then. i said it was my only day to sleep in all day with my lover, where neither of us had to get up. she got this stern look all over her face, and grumped about it being more of a sacrifice for her to give up going to church so she could cover a shift than for me to give up my sunday morning sleep. it was annoying.

all in all, i think mennonites are generally good people, who mean well. but they're pretty protective of their particular lifestyles and moral codes, and really have a hard time with other people being different than that.

    in my experience at least.

I'm surprised that the place you worked was even open on Sunday, all of their places here are closed on Sunday. I am on call on the weekends and I am not allowed to take any calls from midnight Saturday night to midnight Sunday night. We are not allowed to listen to music at work, all of the company vehicles at work even have their radios disabled. Cussing is definitely not allowed. There is a whole bunch of rules, I can't remember all of them. Its kind of a repressive place to work, I don't think I am going to last too much longer here.

Lots of people \/ have to fake being religious to keep their jobs. Just be glad you don't live where you need to fake it to keep your life!

Anyone else find this incredibly disturbing? What does religion teach in general? Be good to one another. If not in church then fuck you!

I've read a study somewhere that concluded religious people are less likely to help a stranger than a non-religious person (I'll try to dig up the study).

    Religion is a silly thing.

    Oh, what is Mennonite?

Religion at its best is a vehicle for channeling altruistic energy to benevolent ends. When it becomes meddlesome, superstitious, or judgmental, it's harmful.

I no longer work for the wacked out mennonite people as of last week. I was still invited to Mennonite Thanksgiving if I was "willing to take the word of Jesus Christ into my heart". LMFAO. They just won't give up on getting a conversion.

I'd wonder about a Mennonite that insists on taking an Atheist to church.
Simply take them aside, the next time they try this stuff, and tell them; I understand you have my best interests at heart, however I'd appreciate it if you'd respect that I am an Atheist, as I respect the fact you are not.

And leave it at that. If they ask after that simply ignore them. It could be they think they have a right to pressure you because they're your boss. That would be wrong.

Ugh, that sounds incredibly annoying. It's totally inappropriate for your boss to pressure you like that.
