If you're watching the news you probably know about how Georgia and Ukraine are trying to join NATO, with NATO being pushed by the USA to hasten the process of accession for these 2 countries. My questions are, What do you think of NATO's expansionism? Is it trying to encircle Russia and eventually China? What are NATO's objectives now when the communist 'enemy' no longer stands? Is Russia justified in its fears and objections to these countries joining the military alliance? I'd just like to know your opinions on that, as I have to write a paper on the NATO - Ukraine - Russian relations.
NATO is bittersweet, to me. Its always nice to have more allies, but at what price? We're incorporating some former USSR republics, and obviously Russia is unhappy about that. We're in a stand off with Iran, and North Korea's impoverished army is a risk that's always there. When we make friends, we create more adamant enemies. But, theres no reason for us to encircle Russia, other than maybe intimidation. We have no objective to invade such a large, and still somewhat powerful nation. China, on the other hand, faces no threat from us. The west and China are great trading partners, and they hold large amounts of our debt. Why do you think we haven't done anything meaningful about their human rights violations? They hold billions of our debt, and have gained more and more political freedom from us in return. NATO is just a deterrent, and an ally to share some of the burden of war death in the war on terrorism. Russia really isn't justified to be fearful of NATO. yeah, we're powerful, but too broke and too weak from our recession and death in our other wars. They shouldn't be opposing the ukraine and georgia form joining, even though they were once united. They're sovereign countries and can do as they wish. But, nations are retarded sometimes.
