Alright, I hope this makes sense. If it doesn't im going to feel really silly. I am interested in your opinions I was at work today and was talking to a guy i work with about dreads. and he asked me "If in 5 years dreads we're to symbolize you supported an evil dictator, and society would shun and look down on you for them... would you still keep them and why?"
I would, and for several reasons. I'm already seen as "an outsider" by my own country (kuwait) for sporting dreads. Not that this is an issue right now, as I'm in college in the states. But back there people are close minded, and refuse to see a flock going against the crowd. So visiting home is always "interesting". With that said, people have stereotyped me in many ways, and I could give a rat's what one thinks of myself or my hair. To answer your question directly, people associating me with chaos and intentions of world domination? heh sure, I'll take it. plus, never had more fun with my hair until recently! I use to style it, spike it, straighten it, perm it, you name it and i probably had that done to my hair. Bunch of chemicals harming my hair along with a tedious maintenance schedule. Eff that
i would keep them. the only reason that made me cut my dreads was because i was bored of them. somebody's opinion cant make me do this or that
haha....Id keep em. Dreads are alread shunned by many folks so its really not that big of a difference!
I hope I keep mine for a long long time. I'm not going to say forever because I'm sure one day I'll wanna hack them off, but you never know. If people wanted me to take them out I'd prolly keep them though just cuz that would be your knee jerk reaction right?
caveman + dictator? its a weird question because i cant really think of how that would be, locks being bad, but i guess i wouldn't cut them because i love them.
Ask that guy: If 5 minutes pass, and suddenly questions like his made him seem like a total douche-bag, would he still ask it?
I said something along the lines of " id keep them, because i got them for my own reasons. I couldn't care less about what people thought about dreads" He just was like "ugh okay", and continued putting toys on the shelf LMAO! if only I thought of that at the time! would have shut his pie hole However, candle dreadies are supporting an evil cause. But we can save them
Is he talking about Rastafarianism? That was my assumption, and I suppose it's valid in it's own right, though misinformed. Edit: though the more I think about it, I don't understand how. I was assuming he meant Halle Selassie and the roots of the Rastafari movement, and was implying it was/is Afro-centric, and a separatist movement. But I guess not.
