did you melt the wax in with a hairdryer after rubbing it in, or did you just rub it in.

please dont let this turn into another wax bashing thread. im just finding out how people who now hate the wax, used and applied the wax.

I've done both; when I dreaded my hair at 15 I rubbed wax in. I think when I did it at 17 it was melted in. The melted wax was less of a problem than the rubbed in, I think because it was deeper and less noticeable. Either way I didn't keep the dreads because of the wax, honestly. :/

When I was looking at fully doing the "wax-dread" method I was going to rub it on smoothly then blow dry it in there.
I've heard it works better if you blow dry it in.
I waxed the ends the day I started and blow dryed them in.
I have to admit, there are times I feel so discouraged that my hair is "falling out" and not "locing" as tightly as I want it to be.
But then I tell myself it's better in the long run and be patient!!!
Which is so hard because I know just putting wax in them would be so much easier in the short run.
Good luck with however you decide, it's your head and don't get discouraged by rude comments. :)

I too melted it in, the problem is although you can't see it, once it cools down it just hardens up inside the hair. It dosen't just magically disappear even though it might seem like it at first. When I cut off the waxy parts of my dreads and opened them up you could see the wax build up which was a kind of grey colour, in other words, mold. Or at least I think so, I must admit some parts that I had waxed where not at all moldy and had no build up. However I didn't really want that stuff in my hair and on me which were the main reasons for cutting those parts off.

I'm going to post a couple of pics one of when I had wax in there (granted I believe the pic was taken right after waxing) and the other after about four years of no waxing, maybe more, I'm not really sure.

Hope this will give you an idea about the difference, I certainly noticed it as well once I'd stopped using it for a while

I'm in Lexington, but I'm from Bath County. I consider the area from Warm Springs Virginia to West Virginia my home, I don't really claim Lexington.

    You?

so melting the wax in helps a bit, but only visually.
basically a lot of people will be wanting to touch my dreads, in particular people of the opposite. so using wax melted into the dreads will still leave them... well waxy? and not pleasant to play with?

It doesn't help at all, it just gives the illusion of dreadlocks to people who don't know anything about dreadlocks. Wax just sticks the knots that you have made from backcombing together. Time and patience is what gives you dreadlocks, not wax.

Thanks very much Arnar, I like them too! Sometime in Feburary they will be hitting the six year mark since I stopped brushing my hair. I can't really believe it has been that long. I think I might post some other pictures then! You'll all have to be patient....

I cut it out, (as in I cut the hair off). It was a long time after I stopped using it (years) before I started to attempt to remove it. I did try for quite a while soaking them with boiling water and dish soap. Anyway it didn't work. I did think for a while that I was getting somewhere but I wasn't. I had kind of mixed emotions about cutting them off. On the one hand I was gutted about losing several inches of hair, on the other I didn't really want that on me any longer. The main factor though was the fact that they smelt when they were wet so that was what made me cut them. And hey after I cut those bits off, guess what they didn't smell any longer! To all those noobs wax traps the water ok, which is what can lead to problems.

I guess if you haven't had the wax in there for that long, with patience and many boiling water soaks you might stand good chances of getting the wax out, if its right in the middle of the dread then it's even harder to remove.

I used wax on my first set of locks, and yes, I used a hair dryer to melt it in. They ended up a sticky, dirty, smelly mess that no one wanted to touch.
This set is wax free and people want to play with my locks all the time.
