America has 138,000 troops in Iraq. Britain has 8,000. Why are the Americans requesting 600 British troops to help out in one of the most dangerous areas of Iraq? Can they not find 600 US troops? Is this political, to do with the presidential election in November?

Kerry keeps saying that the USA is taking 90% of the cost, 90% of the casualties in Iraq. The Black Watch will take many more casualties if they take the place of US troops in southern Baghdad. Is this Bush's response, to bloody some British troops? To reinforce the idea in America that this is a coalition effort and that America is not doing this alone?

It's also do do with the fact that an escalation of American casualties will undermine Bush's chances of re-election. Equally, were America to deploy additional troops in Iraq, fears of the draft would be raised, and equally undermine Bush and the Republicans in a crucial month. It's disgusting that the British government is complicit in this. But were Bush to lose the election, Blair would find himself in a much more isolated position given Kerry's recent criticisms of the war. I've just written to my local MP, Anne Campbell about this. She's a Labour MP who voted against the war, and I'm hoping she may continue to take a principled stand on it....

hahaha i was just about to write in the other post i just finished.
'and if you think the 600 troops redeploying are to bolster Bush's re-election campaign then i may just have to scream' In the fairness of not disrupting threads, i will stay out of this if you wish.

Well if you think it's not political, give me a believable logistical reason why this would be a good idea?

There may be some top jobs in Downing Street that would be perfect for you. Tony Blair could certainly make use of you since Alistair Campbell resigned. Either that or I see you as a reliable old cart horse on a farm, named Boxer....

Well , i was actualy thinking today about alistair cambell and his attack of the BBC.. No. 10 gets accused of lots of diffrent things daily by the media. Once in however long it is decieded to 'attack' ... I don't claim to be right and i hope you pair don't either . surely you two don't mind me trying in my silly way to defend a few things. yeah i would love to be Tony's press secetary or whatever demonistic title you pair could come up with hahahah .

I've already emailed mine. Anne Campbell, Labour MP. I met her at a students event a couple of weeks ago, she's really nice, moderately left wing and voted against the war. I'm not going to vote for her, since it means helping Blair out, but she may listen if she stick by her principles....

Yes i do agree, i have bought it for at least five years. I was not lying though i have gave up the Gaurdian as of late..not that i don't like it, but if a friend is saying stuff you may not agree with you try and listen but your put off a little. I have only bought The Times instead of the Gaurdian just this week actualy. I generaly get through most of the papers though, as i work in a environment were newpapers are everywere. Every newspaper has its good and bad points .. just it depends wich ones your willing to spend money on i guees. You can learn something from them all

you lot are such snobs hahahah

mm ok sorry, those that are snobs, i don't apologise..you know who you are hahah ..maybe it's me just being as common as muck, I don't see that an affiliation to a paper makes a diffrence .. even though i responded in a typical way at the start.. before we have a 3 page debate between certain people  about the meaning of the way i said 'snob' ok let me say 'i doff my cap and say sorry, to all':)

Either that or I see you as a reliable old cart horse on a farm, named Boxer....

but i doubt my life would be any better or worse for knowing ?

Anyway, i think the media are making a bigger deal of it than required...thats a given i guess ?.(imho) I am sure the soldiers just wish to get on with their job.

It was a reference to Animal Farm. I'm not going to spoil the plot for you. It's a very short, and very brilliantly constructed book. Read it, and you'll see what I mean....
