So yesterday was my family christmas party, and my moms brings up the fact that im dreading my hair... which was followed by some looks of disgust (mostly the girl family members hah). My aunt is then telling me that to do dreads, you have to start at the root and work your way up braiding or some weird shit idk,and she said that "jason castro from american idol said how he did it". I then explained the natural way of doing it, which is what im doing, and the backcombing. She kept saying I was wrong.... it was pretty entertaining listening to her have no idea what she was talking about, and kept sayin no your wrong if you do that then you have one big dread.. and i kept tryin to explain no, but whatever people have such closed minds.. and then my grandma walks in and says "you know now you are gunna get bugs and stuff cuz you cant wash it", which she didnt beleive that tyou actually HAVE to waSH it... ay yi yi...

On a lighter note, I stopped combing my hair december 5th, and it has come a long way, much much faster than I expected, i have at least 10 dreddies forming! all knotted and everything, im so excitedd

Jason Castro said he braided his hair to get dreads? Bull I say, I've seen pictures of him with baby dreads, it looked back combed (and slightly waxed). His dreads came out nice though.

Why do people who DON'T have dreads always talk that shit?

I just wanna scream at them-- dude, you don't know what your talking about, I don't care what fuckin person you know told you, go fuck yourself with your misinformation. Like no I'm not putting wax or twists in or stop washing my hair to trap dirt. And of course asshole it's already started. I don't need a friggin salon to not comb my hair.

yeah I've noticed that the people that "know" the most about dreads, are the ones who have A)never talked to anyone with dreads and B)never researched it at ALL

My family begs me to look 'respectable' so I should cut them off and get them cut in a 'trendy' style
It REALLY pisses me off with all the stereotypes, eg:
    • Dont wash your hair
    • Have to use wax to achieve dreads
    • I don't do enough 'work' on them which is why they look so shit
I met a guy in my local bakery, he complimented me on them and told me about how he used to have them when he went to uni, then he did the inevitable and told me about how he used Dax wax, I told him you shouldn't use wax, but he was adamant that I needed to use it, and that my dreads would actually dread if I used it:eek:

I don't mind correcting people on the myths etc, but I'm getting to the point now where it annoys me!
"Your hair is gonna grow normally if you dont comb it"
    ARGHHHH I hate people sometimes!

ha=christmas and dreads don't go.or should I say, family and dreads! I went to see my nan today.she's a bit out of it but was staring at me and I knew she was looking at my hair. Then she blurted out, 'I don't like your hair, the scraggly look'. I just don't like feeling that people wish I didn't have dreads. My mom didn't want me to get them but says they are nice now...but I still think she'd prefer me to have 'normal' hair :(

ohh like regular soap like dial or safeguard? I heard someone say something about aloe, but wouldn't that leave a residue as well? I have red hair and think I would look hot with dreads but my wife would kill me she likes to run her fingers through it, I respect that.

And Aloe is for taming the frizzies, like serum/gel/mousse would do for noraml hair.
