I've been trying to make granny squares and I know how to crochet but every time I try to do one, it starts out about 10 inches long and by the third or fourth row it's like 3 inches. I'm not doing it very tight, I'm making it very very loose, and I'm not skipping stitches either. What the heck is going on?! HELP!
I can remember having the same problem with knitting squares..... Could it be your wool(whatever) is too thick or (stretchy) for the size of the hook you are using..... Try doing it with a bigger hook, or less thicker wool.... hope this helps strawpup
Are you trying to make it in horizontal rows? Granny squares should be worked in rounds. With horizontal rows, you need to make sure you don't miss the stitches at the end of each row. Count them each time to make sure you still have the same number.
i've been doing granny squares to make a rug you start with 12 trebles, like 3 on each side to make a square, then go round and round 3 trebles in each hole except on corners where you do six trebles somthing like that
I have no idea what zalia said but if you're going straight across, be sure to crotchet an extra loop at the end of the row
you have to keep the same tension throughout. you are starting off at one tension, and as you go along, you're getting tighter. stay consistent
mm, sounds like what loveflower said, are u chaining at the end of each row? if not, basically, ur skipping a stitch at the ends, so when u get to the end, chain 1 (is doing single ) chain 2 ( for a half double) ch 3 ( for a double crochet). and with zalia, where ya from? i kno european and american crochet terms are different, where americans, call it a double crochet,i think euros, call it a treble. and are u making granny square that start round? or are u just like crocheting little back n forth squares? if u want u can pm me or post back
I do make a new one at the end, and it still shrinks, the only difference is I get a zig-zag effect on the end
